  • Can't establish connection between Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble Pro

    Hello everyone,

I am in the middle of an urgent project and desperatly trying to playback my scores from Siblius (Ultimate) through Vienna Ensemble Pro (Macbook Pro 2017, High Sierra 10.13.6). I have to admit that I am new to VSL and Vienna Ensemble, but have worked with other Sample configurations before.

The basic music sheet is a string quartett. I have been follwoing all the instructions to set up the working configuration for Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble Pro, succesfully chosen "Vienna Ensemble Pro Event Input" as Playback device and assigned one string section each to Channels 1-4. In Vienne Ensemble, the channels 1-4 have been assigned with the according instrumets, nevertheless, there is no sound at playback.

I would guess the problem lies somewhere in my configuration at Sibelius as in the Sibelius Mixer Window the "Vienna Ensemble Pro Event Input" slider shows no activity while Sibelius plays the score, and the "Show Interface" button in this slider opens a small VE Windows which says "not assinged". I also I do not get a sound when I click the "Test" Button in the playback devices window in Sibelius. Ensemble does play sounds when I play manually play on the virtual keys in the Ensemble Windows.

Also, my Vienna Ensemble shows Vienna Ensemble Pro Standalone" when running - could this be the problem?

I tried really hard to find out what I might have done wrong in my setup, but I am stalled at the moment...😐

Very grateful for any advice - thanks!
    Johnny

  • Hi Johnny, you have to choose the Vienna Ensemble (x64) plugin. The Event input plugin does not produce any sound, but it is a workaround for the 16 midi channel limitation of VST2. Also you have to open the Vienna Ensemble Server and not the standalone Version. After you opened it, added an instance, you have to open the plugin, click on connect, connect it to your instance and then save the playback configuration in Sibelius. Best, Ben

    Hello Ben,

Thanks so much - while you were responding, I browsed through the forum again and found the answer you already posted in a earlier thread to somebody who made the same mistake as I did - using VE Pro Standalone instead of the Server version, and yes, that solved the problem immediately. I was just about to delete my thread, and then I saw that you - again - had just answered.

Therefore, thanks again for your patience & help for the Still-Kind-of-Newbies in here, very much appreciated! 👍😊

    All the best
    Johnny
