I am using two macines, one running cubase and one running VEP (cf. signature). I installed VEP 7 on my server machine but on launching Cubase on the local machine the plugin says "incorrect version" when trying to connect. Does this mean that I have to pay another 45€ for a proper upgrade (bringing the total to 120€)?

I must have missed something in the announcement email. Usually I would jump on those because I never thought I'd see ambiguous business practices from VSL.

Upgrading from 4 to 5 was 40€.

Upgrading from 5 to 6 was 80€.

And this was for three licenses.

Unless I'm wrong, in order to get the equivalent upgrade to 7, using the "Early Bird" offer, a customer would need to pay 165€ (75 + 45 + 45).

How is any of this even remotely fair is beyond me.

I will not start a discussion about the term "fair", but a lot of effort is going into maintenance and development of our most complex software product, and we are offering upgrades every few years (VE Pro 4: 2008, VE PRO 5: 2011, VE PRO 6: 2016, VE Pro 7: 2019). 

Adaptations to new OSs, new versions of all hosts and new plug-in formats require a lot of attention, and we are doing our best to meet our goals in terms of stability and reliability.

While we're on license;

I just downloaded and installed to two PC's, just like I've been running VEP 6. & opens fine on the DAW PC. When I try to open the server on the slave, it says no license found. Not sure what I'm missing. Any thoughts please. Thanks

Did you install the latest eLicenser Control Center on the slave, and download a VEP7 license to the key?

You have downloaded your license on the 3rd of April.

Yes, you can uninstall VE PRO 7 and roll back to VE Pro 6.

That is still the case.
If you run the VEP Host only on one computer you will only need one license.

If you're only using one VEP server (on a slave machine)..and not running the actual VEP server on your DAW machine, then just move the VEP7 license to the dongle that is on your slave machine.  You should be good to go.

I personally feel also that the license change should have included VEP local server on the daw machine + one more slave if desired.  I think a lot of people would dabble with that, myself included, but I can't justify spending more money for it, so VSL has taken that fun away from me in VEP7, and I'm not too happy about it either, but it is what it is...make due with one VEP server is probably fine these days for a lot of people, myself included.  So I will live with the reduced functionality.  VSL products are otherwise completely fabulous to use.

That is incorrect. Please read Paul's confirmations above. This was the subject of my original post. Even if you only need one server computer, you still need a second license on the computer running your sequencer in order to be able to connect to that server. You can't connect to a VEP 7 server with a computer running a VEP 6 license.

No.  You only need a license where the servers are running.  You do not need a server running on your DAW machine unless you will host plugins there in addition to slave machines, then you would need another license.  The VEP plugin does not require a license.

That's correct.

It was this reply that made me shell out for an additional license. I don't think Paul would have said I needed a second license for my master Cubase machine if it wasn't the case.

You only need a license of VE Pro on every computer you are running a Vienna Ensemble Pro Server on.

Excuse me Paul, but this is not what you wrote above. Please re-read my question. I specifically asked how many licenses I needed in order to run a VEP 7 server on a remote computer and accessing it through Cubase on a master computer. I wrote that I couldn't access the remote VEP server with my current VEP 6 software on my Cubase machine, and you replied that I needed a second VEP license in order to do that.

When I replied that it wasn't fair, you explained that the new licensing policy is justified by the effort you guys put into R&D and updates. Fine, I thought. I didn't like what I had perceived as misleading marketing, but being a VSL user for years and a pretty solid advocate of your software I thought it was inevitable and purchased a second license.

If this wasn't necessary, please let me know how I should access the remote server through the master computer without a VEP 7 license (am I supposed to just install VEP 7 in order to use the plugin, with no license?).

Also, if the above is correct, I would be grateful if you could cancel my 2nd license and arrange for a refund. I have the serial numbers if you need them but I suppose you have access to my profile.

Yes, exactly. The VEP plugins don't need a license. Just the same like VEP6. But you can't connect the VEP 6 plugin to the VEP7 server. Both must be VEP7.
Just install VEP7 on both machines and make sure your license is plugged into the VEP server.

This wasn't clear from Paul's reply above. I didn't know that you didn't need a license for the master machine since I've had three licenses for years (since I first bought VEP 3 or 4).
