Hi
I know exactly what you are saying, I have worked for 30 years without templates, and that "worked" for me. As inspiration hit, the sound was in my head, just load it in and create. But lately, I decided I would once again try templates and for me, for now, it is working. Having each articulation ready to go is providing me with far more inspiration...........perhaps im not a very inspired person and need the sounds to spark the creative process 😊
Would you mind sharing some basic architecture of your template? Goals and rationale...? I'm working on my template right now, and I'm sure that could be useful. 😊
Hi
Please keep in mind of what I am about to say is my personal opinion. There are som many people on these forums who have been using templates for years and are much more experienced than me in this aspect.
Basic Architecture - Im laying out my template based on a traditional orchestra. This is still a work in process and is a very time consuming process, a good reason why many people would ratehr spend that time being creative rather than administrative i guess. But setting up the template for me starts with a section, say woodwinds, and working down from piccolo to contra bassoon. In each I will have 3 or 4 different legato patches, then sustains then shorts then effects (runs, trills etc). Each track represents an articulation. Each instrument may have 10 to 15 tracks. I do not use keyswitched patches, just a personal preference. I also load up a seperate track instrument for each articulation...why that and not have say EW Play engine have multiple instruments on different channels? I found that when freezing / unfreezing tracks, Cubase would loose what instrument was assinged to a particular midi track. Using a play instance per track solved this. I also use VSL Syncron strings but this I do use keyswitched (I like the easy to use interface)
Rationale - I wanted as many articulaions and sounds ready to go as possible. For me, I have found being able to just "play about" with an instrument sound sometimes sparks an idea and this can then be developed into something. I wasnt as creative when I didnt use templates...........but thats probably a limitation in my creative process.
Goals - I want to be able to produce and finish many more pieces than I do. I feel a full templat will help me in this. Yes it is hard work to begin with but I feel it will be worth it.
Heres a link to a youtube vid on templates
Yes there are many videos out there, I just like Guys style in how he gets information across.
I hope this helps
