Dorico 2.2 update released

Hi all, Andi in particular. Dorico continues to move on apace (it wouldn't surprise me if Steinberg has given them a window in which they have to turn a profit - but whatever the reasons they're working very quickly). I should state I am in no way affiliated with the Dorico team - although I've pretty much switched over entirely. The only thing persuading me to keep using Sibelius is the lack of simple integration between VSL (I mainly use the special edition for notation work, and do my more sophisticated programming in Cubase) and Dorico.

There's a learning curve, for sure, but the programme is already doing pretty much everything I need it to, even at version 2. While I'm hoping enough people stay on Sibelius (competition is always good, right?) I'm not going back anytime soon, and am really keen for a greater degree of integration between VSL and Dorico, so I'm wondering where we're up to (if anywhere) with this. 

I don't really have the time to be hacking expression maps etc - I'm after the level of integration that Sibelius has. I was able to set up soundsets etc, and while it was a little clunky, it worked well enough. I'd love an update if one is available?

I am watching the development of Dorico. There are some wishes left from our side, before we can immerse ourselves in making dedicated Expression Maps.

Thanks Andi, it's great to hear. I'm pretty convinced Dorico will take over as the market leader if they can keep developing at the pace and quality that they are, so I'm glad Vienna are taking them seriously. Like you, their team are very responsive, so I've no doubt you'll get what you need from them at some point. I obviously have no idea what they're choosing to prioritise, but I imagine they'll be looking to keep the film and media guys happy, so I'm always happy to piggy-back on their financial clout ;-)

Well, I also think Dorico was a very promising project, and I had the hope they were able being in the same company of Cubase developers, of importing some of the sequencing abilities of Cubase family.

It was very disappointing to discover that the program, for some internal structure of playback algorithms, still doesn't give to the user control on the velocity of a single note into the MIDI track (keeping it for the pretty limited and arbitrary interpretation of some dynamic marks, with very little customization available).

This is not just a strange missing feature for a program with the ambiton of offering real MIDI editing behind the score, but also it makes impossible to use the full set of sound shaping features of several libraries and virtual instruments.

For VSL, using velocity crossfades, it's still possible to minimize the impact of this limitation, but still percussive instruments and articulations effects, or solos, are not easy to manage without control over single note velocity...

Crossing fingers sooner or later Dorico and VSL team will get closer and a better integration of VSL libraries, beside better MIDI editor, will be available to us. I hope sooner... :)

It's been stated for a long time now that that is obviously on the roadmap for the future.

Oh... I got it. They keep it for the upcoming 2.5 release that will force owners to pay for the update... 😊

Ad the Cubase-like, annual-subscription-fees round-robin for 0.5 version next step will start LOL
