  • Dropouts Only when 2 Slaves are playing at once...

    I’m running VEP 6 on 2 Windows 8.1 Slaves which are connected to Cubase 8.5 running OS X Sierra.  

     

    I’m getting dropouts and crackling in a particular case:

     

    When I play a sequence that triggers samples on both VEP slaves the dropouts occur.  If I solo the midi connected to Slave 1 there are no dropouts.  If I solo the midi connected to Slave 2 also no dropouts.  But, when I play them together things start falling apart.  

     

    I’m connected through a typical Gigabit ethernet switch.  None of the three computers seems to be overly stressed.  I’ve experimented with all manner of buffers, cores, and so on with no discernible difference.

     

    Any ideas on what could be causing this problem?

    How many voices are you streaming?
    How many audio returns are involved (from VE PRO back to Cubase)?
    Did you try with a higher latency (both in your soundcard and in the VE PRO plug-in)?

  • Hi Paul - Thanks for the reply.  With my current template I am set up to stream around 250 stereo audio channel into Cubase via VEP.  I did a lot of testing and clearly this is too much for my setup.  The fewer streams I send/recieve the better overall performance I get.  That said I have a few questions: Do you know roughly how many streams one can expect to pass through a gigabit port using VEP?  Is 10gb ethernet worth exploring at this point?  Lastly, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend information on how to directly connect my two PC vienna slaves to the Mac pro.  I find all networking with mac/pc very confusing...Thanks for any help or suggestions!

    That's what I thought. The best idea is to take advantage of the routing options you have in VE PRO. 

    One sample of audio is 4 bytes in size. So if the samplerate is 44100, for a single channel of audio, 44100*4 bytes is the size for one second of audio. 32 audio channels would thus mean 32*44100*4 = 5644800 bytes per second. So for 32 active audio outputs, VE Pro only needs up to 5-6 MB/s.

    Networking: I'd suggest to use a standard router or switch.
