  • I ordered GS3, a question

The orchestra version has some VSL samples. They are listed on the bottom of this page and there seem to be quite a few of them:

GS3 Orchestra users - will these samples give me a good idea of the full versions' samples? (ie: Opus 1, etc) Is the demo version capable of producing some form of a developed composition?

  • Yes, you basically get a complete set of both 24-bit short and long articulations of all the major orchestral sections, as well as a fairly complete percussion section, plus 16-bit looped sections. In my view (obviously others may differ), this is about 75% of what is typically used when composing a piece. It definitely gives you a good flavor for the quality of the library. What's missing is:

Performance sections, especially legato. This has to be heard to believed. This is a huge part of the purchased libraries.

All the detailed articulations that breathe life into a composition. Pizzicato, sfz attacks, short, medium, long notes, dynamics, repetitions, runs, the list goes on and on. It essentially just gives a broader palette to choose from when composing.

However, I believe that you could compose quite effectively using nothing but the samples supplied with GS3. Naturally, you just couldn't be quite as expressive as if you had the full library, but of course, that's sort of the point. [[;)]]

  • Well, I've been playing with the VSL samples, and all I can say is...........Holy...........Crap..............

I'm in awe of how incredible these samples are - I was playing with the Cello Staccato articulation alone for at least 45 minutes. I have so much inspiration to compose now with proper tools; one day, I'll have the Pro Edition, but that's a long way off for a kid like me.

If only I knew what I was doing - I'm too excited right now to read the manual. I tried to link up GS with Nuendo to sequence, but the computer decided it didn't want to do that, so it crashed. At what time did composers have to become computer scientists?

Anyway, a million thanks to the VSL team for such a great product and for allowing Tascam to include these demo samples in GS3 orchestra!
