  • arpege with the concert guitar.

    Hello everybody,

I bought the VSL concert guitar and i'm trying to play an arpege.
Do you have an idea on the way to realize that?
I need to use the legato gig file?

For the legatos articulations there are several keyswitches...but it's not expla
    ined in the documentation???
Somebody knows the meaning of each keyswitch?

    Thanks in advance!

  • the first keyswitch (C#-2 if i remember right, doesn't matter anyway) triggers the "01leg" files, it means that if you go from a C3 to a C#3 you have to trigger that keyswitch just before hitting C#3.
And if you go from a C2 to G2, you'll have to hit the keyswitch, before hitting G2, that triggers the "07leg" files, because between C2 and G2 there are 7 semitones.

Of course it's very difficult to do that in real time [:D], there's an easy way which consists to use the legato tool bundled with the VSL concert guitar.

  • There are also recorded arpeggios in the "chords" samples. That is one of the coolest things about Concert Guitar IMHO.

Load up the 07 AG_CHORDS patch (for example). Play the G1 key switch or trigger it from the performance tool (alternation tool maybe). Now play an A4 key. You should hear the sound of an arpeggiated A min chord.

Be sure to try out the rasgueado mode (very rapid arpeggiation) triggered from the E1, F1 or F#1 key switches. The voicing of the chord should be the same as the "arpeggio" sample for any particular note you play.

  • ok! thanks for your fast answers!! [:)]

When I say an arpege....I want to choose the notes...
    not just the complete chords...

Do you have a midi example for me?
It should exists somewhere on the VSL web site?

    Thanks in advance!!
    fred!

  • You may find that effective use of the Concert Guitar runs contrary to what you propose. With VSL I nearly always choose to perform rather than rely on the recorded version, as with trills for instance.

But Concert Guitar is unique in my opinion. It's very strong on recorded performances which makes up for its weakness in the basic tones of the simple sustained notes. Maybe I should say that the separate notes don't conform to my expectations of what a concert guitar sounds like. But the strummed and arpeggiated chords are a whole different matter. They're substantial and realistic enough to satisfy a guitarist.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for all your answers...
    But I didn't solve my problem... [:(]

In fact, For the package SINGLE NOTES, the sound seems strange for me....
    No bass...
When you hear the PERF LEGATO PACKAGE, the sound seems normal..
    More bass...
So for the moment I use the PERF LEGATO PACKAGE..but in reality I should use the SINGLE NOTES PACKAGE...

I check the others packages..and for example the sound for the PERF REPETITION PACKAGE is also normal...

    What is the problem?
Should I use the SINGLE NOTE package?
I have the impressions than for this package..the notes are played near of bridge..and not in the middle of the rosace...
So no bass!! and the notes sounds very small!!!

I think, I don't use the package correctly (I hope..)

    Do you have a solution?

    regards,
    Frédéric.

  • i'm afraid it is a matter of recording or may be the way the player performs his instrument, you know, i also noticed these sound differences while playing for instance with the forte performance legato of Trombones Ensemble, it sounds like the trombones are playing between mezzoforte and forte, not really forte...but i don't mind it's so realistic .. [:)]

  • The single notes are also used in the performane legati as starting notes.
So the sonic difference is only the difference of a startingnote (where the instrument starts to build up a resonance), and a performance legato note (here you have from the beginning a resonance of the previous performed note, especially audible when the previous note is performed on a different string)

The loudest velocity of the single notes (ff) is ponticello, this articluation is of course performed near the bridge.

For a warm sound I would recommend the mf articulations.

The most authentic sounding arpeggios are real performed arpeggios.
The arpeggio articulations are mapped on keyswitch G1 in all chord mappings.

  • Thanks Herb for your answer!

I would like to give you the begining of my midi file and my giga studio file....to see if I use the best solution...

    Is it possible?

It's very imoprtant for me...I have to do this work for a rock band.

May be Thomas can give me his opinion also?

    Best regards.
    Frédéric PECQUEUR.

  • Send it to

    office@vsl.co.at

I'll forward it to Thomas Meitz.

  • Thank you very much Herb!

I send my file this evening! [:)]
