I have indeed read the manual, but I went back and read it again just to be sure I didn't miss anything. As described, the use of the I/O plugin does not work for me.

I use a setup in Logic that utilizes the environment and external midi tracks. Each instance in VE Pro corresponds with a software instrument track that has the VE Pro server inserted on it in Logic. Using this setup, I experience significant delay when midi notes are played back. Nothing syncs up to grid. If I insert an I/O plugin on the software instrument track, set the outputs to (1-2) and bypass it, the problem remains. If I make the plugin active, the delay disappears, and everything syncs up to the grid as it should.

That's fine, but using this setup forces my VE Pro tracks to go directly out stereo (1-2). The bus sends stop working, and I'm forced to put a reverb on the master output (which is highly undesirable).

Now, it's certainly possible that I'm simply failing to comprehend basic VE Pro / Logic usage. If that's the case, I would greatly appreciate some advice regarding this problem, because I'm completely stuck.

Are you using VE Pro Audio/Event Input plugins in Logic? If not, the I/O plugin doesn't really serve a purpose. Only thing I can think of is that you have latency compensation disabled in Logic or VE Pro perhaps.

I am not using Audio/Event plugins in Logic. Strangely enough, however, the I/O plugin, when active, gets rid of my delay problems completely. When active and set to stereo out (1-2). When it is bypassed or not plugged in, the delay remains.

Latency compensation is enabled in both Logic and VE Pro.

Alright, I just tested this as well using the Event Input plugin. I created a lone software instrument track, activated a VE Pro server on it. Then I created a multitimbral software instrument track and put an event input plugin on it, assigned it to the selected instance. I then inserted the I/O plugin on the latter, chose the output (1-2) and bypassed it. Same result with quite a bit of delay.

Well, then I tried putting an I/O plugin on the server track, set it to (1-2), and left it active. I also activated the I/O plugin on the event input plugin track. Worked perfectly. Bypass them both, the delay returns.

First, here are some of my preferences in Logic:

In VE Pro: Plug-In Latency Compensation is Enabled

Alright. I tried out using the Event Input a little more in depth than before. Even at zero buffers on the VE Pro server plugin, there was delay, but at each consecutive buffer level the delay went up significantly. I read about this problem elsewhere on these forums, and I saw you guys were working on it, so that's cool. Can't wait to use that in Logic.

I went back to testing using a barebones setup with the Ve Pro 5 Multiport layer. Just used one instance of VE Pro and one external midi track. at a buffer size of 1024 samples in logic (and any buffer level for the ve pro plug in) this worked fine with an ACTIVE I/O plugin on the VE Pro server track set to (1-2) out. Seriously, there's quite a bit of delay when that plugin is either bypassed or not there. I know it's not SUPPOSED to affect a setup like this that is not utilizing audio/event input plugins, but this is what's happening.

So, I continued testing using various I/O buffer sizes logic side with different buffer levels on the VEP server plug-in. The strange thing is, things only sync up and work as intended when the I/O buffer size in logic is 1024. Any lower level throws the whole thing off, regardless of buffer size for the VEP plugin.

To reiterate: There is no delay when the I/O Buffer Size in Logic is set to 1024 (using any buffer level for the VEP plugin) and when there is an ACTIVE I/O plugin on the server track. I'm sorry to make a ton of replies on this post, but I'm confounded. Any help would be hugely appreciated and would significantly reduce my chance for migraines.

Just resurrecting this old thread from midsummer to see if there has been any progress regarding this issue (see above). I still use the rather clunky workaround I referred to in my previous post, and would love to know if A.) It's a known issue that's been resolved or B.) If other people have experienced this issue. Would be good to know I'm not crazy.

I'm having the exact same problem as TheOverdark

1) I'm running the Vienna Ensemble PRO Server Interface (not the Audio/Event Input Plug-in!!) on an Instrument Channel.

2) When playing live on my keyboard I get a significant latency. It't not possible to play any fast lines at all.

3) When I insert a I/O Utility plug-in in the channel which is hosting the Vienna Ensemble PRO Server Interface plugin, the Latency is gone (but only if the I/O Utility plug-in is active; if I bypass the I/O Utility plug-in the latency is there again). 😞

That means all the audio is directly routed to output 1-2.

And that means it's not possible anymore to separate all the instruments into stems by routing the to different busses.

=> that's very frustrating.

This is a rather old thread, so maybe there's a solotion for this by now...
...a solution that I'm not aware of?

@Karel: No disrespect, but reading the manual does not clear up this issue in one read!! There you say "Only applies to LOGIC in combination with Audio/Event Input Plug-ins" AND there you can read that it also should work if the I/O Utility plug-in is bypassed.

Just found soething in a user manual for UAD powered plugins:
"Force Logic Live Mode
When UAD v4.3.0 (and higher) and Logic 7.2.1 (and higher) are used to- gether and this setting is checked, all Logic tracks with UAD plugins are forced into "Live Mode" and latency is reduced."
Why is there no similar feature for VE Pro????

Solved my problem by turning off Logic's latency compensation...
