    I am trying to reduce the size of the legato strings gig files:

    since I don't use the legato patches for skips larger than a fourth, thought it might be possible to delete a full 8 layers in these patches. THen I'd have an 8-dimension rather than a 16-dimension key switch file.

    Does anyone have advice on how to do this most efficiently? Thanks!

    Overcame my fear of the editor and succeeded -- it is quite easy, really, and now the legato patches take only 4-5% of my total gigastudio memory, versus 9-10%! Select all key regions (top right quadrant in gs editor); click on the little white triangle/arrow at 'keyboard'. Delete 'split 8' through 'split 15'. Rename 'split 16' to 'split 8' (probably unnecessary). This is the 'espressivo' that I use as default with larger jumps, has no extra notes programmed into it (there are other choices: split 13,14 and 15, I believe). Select the instrument name, right click for properties. Change keyswitch range from C#1 to G#1. Save as a new name to preserve the original.

    [edit] I don't use the performance tool, so can't say what effect this change would have on it -- but probably not a good one!

    to minimize the keyswitches is defenitely the wrong way.
    You have to empty certain regions manually.
    I can't post a detailed description now, because I don't have access to Gigastudio at the moment.
    (Sitting with broken arms at home after a week in hospital)

    Hopefully next week.

    What I don't understand is how you can work with performance legato instruments without the tool?
    Just for info: The legato tool is not only a live-performance tool, there are a lot users using it with scoring programms.

    Yes, I did that, and tried to say it above. THEN removed the non-applicable keyswitches.

    There is an earlier post showing how to do legato without the performance tool: it simply involves inserting the correct keyswitch note just before the change of pitch, and transposing up 4 octaves when the legato interval is downward. Not exactly a 'musical' process, but not too time consuming when one is working in the event list anyway (which I do, hour after hour, for expression, tuning, dynamics, etc). And the benefit imo is that everything is VISIBLE, with some mental translation like looking at a clarinet line and mentally transposing. My working setup probably wouldn't suit others, but all of us probably like to get things comfortable before trying to use all this technology at full speed.

    Back on thread, Dave Govett has a Reduced RAM option on the Garritan Orchestral Strings. I think it effectively reduced the memory needs by one half. Maybe he could tell us his methods.
