  • MIR PRO Jazz Drums

hi, i am demoing MIR PRO 24 with Roompack 2 (Funkhaus etc.) right now and i miss the recognizing of the jazz drums in the room. is there no "preset" for the jazz drums?

i didn`t use it in ensemble but as an insert on my imperial and string tracks. i can choose these in MIR Pro`s menu but i can`t see jazz drums to select.

  • You're right, I didn't do any MIR Pro settings for Vienna Jazz Drums MIR Pro up to now, sorry to say so. This has several reasons  - one of them is that the Jazz Drums have the original room microphones available in addition to the close mics, which is a bit against the MIR way of thinking. Another, more important reason is the absence of a dedicated player interface for the drum-kit which makes it a bit cumbersome to create really useable presets (and not just a heap of settings).

When working with the Vienna Jazz Drums I mostly use three Icons with "Cardioid"-General Purpose Instrument Profiles selected (mostly for individual wet/dry rations): One for the kick, one for the snare, and a wider one for the rest of the set.

    HTH,

well, that makes sense. thanks for the tip! ðŸ˜Š

  • If I buy some non VSL instrument, which has 3 mics, should I use the above setup when placing it in MIR Pro? I believe I need to chose the close mic.

  • Actually, I am considering the EW Symphonic Choirs.

It will depend on the actual sounds, of course, but yes - that seems to be a logical approach.

  • Great, thanks!

  • still demoing mir pro and everything works fine. quick question for you dietz: does mir pro still have the group function? i came across this in a beat kaufmann tutorial in which he uses an older version of mir i suppose. anyway, i thought it would be good feature when working your way with the jazz drums.

  • The proper Group-function has been eliminated during the transition from legacy Vienna MIR to MIR Pro, sorry to say so. VSL's software engineers are convinced that the "Selection Groups"-feature is a valid replacement (... I'm not).

"Selection Groups" allow for the simultaneous, relative change of a parameter for all selected Icons directly on a stage or in the Instrument Channel on the right. This can be either achieved by pressing the "Alt"-key while changing the value of a paramter with the mouse, or you can decide to make this the standard behaviour without the need of any additional modifier key (the option for that in MIR Pro's General Preferences: "Automatically edit selected channels as a group", respectively "Auto-group selected channels" in the plug-in version).

You _can't_ type in values for all Icons, though, and there's no way to have the same absolute value for all. It's not possible to exclude certain parameters from a temporary Selection Group - you have to un-select any Icon you want to remain at its curren value. This is highly unconvenient when working with Hidden Icons, and in general a major drawback when working with many Icons on a stage.

You can save, modify and recall different "Selection Groups" from the Main Menu or the right-click context menu in MIR Pro, but there is no shortcut to access these saved Groups - you have to use the mouse and find your way through the menu structure.

    ********

A proper Group-function is needed desperately in MIR Pro, and you could strengthen this point-of-view by sending a feature request to support@vsl.co.at . ;-)

    Kind regards,

    done! ðŸ˜Š

i couldn`t believe that the auto group was the only group function when i saw it yesterday, that`s why i posted my request. especially when the feature once was there.
