  • Basic set-up for Finale 2014 to use VSL

    Hi Andi,

Having used Finale since the early 1990's I have finally abandoned Gigastudio, tried LinuxSampler and now VSL.  VSL works beautifully on its own (Vienna Ensemble Pro5 both 32/64 versions) but seems to freak Finale 2014 out!! (I mean it crashes everytime I try to even mention Ensemble Pro). I also assume that Finale should be set to Play through VST - not MIDI.  I have read the VE Pro manual and have followed the instructions. I launch the VE Pro Server. I open Finale and load a small (String Quartet) empty template. I access the VST Banks & Effects box and set the first bank (ch1-16) to VE Pro.  I click to edit the VE Pro and up pops the Sever Interface.  When I choose the 127.0.0.1(NEW), a new instance of VE Pro appears momemtarily, Finale crashes and disappears, and so does everything else except for a very lonely and empty VE Pro Server Interface.

I think it may have to do with the actual Audio setup in Finale.  My choices are MME, DirectSound and ASIO. I use Hammerfal DSP Multiface [RME].  I have checked the drives of all the sound devices on my PC (Windows7 Ult 64-bit 8GB memory Intel Core i5 CPU 3.10GHz).

Both settings with MME and ASIO cause it to crash. With DirectSound Finale can't seem to load its sound engine (error 7) so VE Pro doesnt load.

    Kind regards

    Gi

  • Hello Gi!

I'm sorry to read about your problem. As far as I can see you did no wrong. Normally the ASIO driver would be the best one to choose. Here are a few questions for you.
Do you have the latest versions of VE Pro and Finale 2014 installed?
Can you load other VST-Instruments with Finale 2014?
Does the same problem occur with the free Vienna Ensemble version?
Do you get any error messages when Finale crashes?
How long does it take from the VE Pro instance appearing to Finale crashing?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

I forgot to sign of properly last post!

    1. Yes
    2. Yes. I use Linuxsampler with my .gig files and ASIO setting. When I used Gigastudio in WinXP I used DirectSound
    3. I do not have the free Vienna Ensemble version but will give it a try.
    4. Yes, the generic Windows7 message when a programme crashes
    5. About the flash of an eyelid.

    Kind regards,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul!

Thanks for the details. I can't reproduce such a behaviour here and I'm sorry to say that I don't know why this might happen on your computer. I forwarded this thread to one of our developers.

    Best,

  • Hi Andi,

It seems that everything works now, except when I switch on my MIDI keyboard, then Finale crashes. The MIDI keyboard is fine with VEPro on its own. Of course I need the MIDI keyboard as a tool for writing music.  There is no issue with the keyboard, Finale and Linuxsampler.  Settings in all cases use ASIO drivers.

    Kind regards

    Paul

  • Hello Paul!

From your latst description this doesn't sound like a problem with our software. Have you tried turning on the keyboard before starting Finale? I would contact Finale support.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi, I have on both counts, and they (Finale) are working on it.

  • Hello Andy,

Just to continue on the theme of basic set-up. Instead of Finale2014 playing through VST (still not working - waiting for Finale Help Desk), what would I need, to play Finale through MIDI using Vienna Ensemble Pro? I assume I would need a DAW (with MIDI facilities?).  My current hardware audio outs are MOTU 828mk3, Focusrite Scarlett18i20 and the aging RME Hammerfall DSP.  All come with a mixControl and a MIDI In & Out.

    Kind regards

    Paul

  • Hello Paul!

Normally I would always play our instruments via VST (PC) or AU (Mac) with Finale. To trigger VE Pro on a PC via MIDI, you can do as follows.
    - Install a virtual MIDI driver like LoopBe.
    - Start VE Pro standalone before starting Finale.
    - Set up MIDI Out ports in Finale to your virtual MIDI driver and MIDI In ports in VE Pro to your virtual MIDI driver.
    - Play Finale via MIDI.

    Best regards,
    Andi
