  • Sibelius 7.5.1 and VSL playback problem

    Hi!

I have a problem with VSE and sib 7.5 playback. It seems like sib notation is somehow corrupted after I have done music. e.g. trills don't stop and staccato articulations wont change back to legato, if I create slurs above it plays staccato etc. ...after all it seems that soundset won't work anymore in the correct way.

I have newest updates etc. and I 've triplechecked all settings!

Do u have any ideas to fix this?

    Hello Lamufa!

It can have different reasons why articulation changes don't work as supposed. It's hard to say what's going wrong in your case. For most such situations the "Troubleshooting" section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual should be able to offer a solution. It can be downloaded in the MyVSL section of the website under "Notation related".

    Hi Markus!

Trills are working normally here. You can send your project files to support@vsl.co.at.

  • Yup, same here. Trills won't stop once they've been triggered. It seems to work correctly for a little while (like a very little while—literally the first couple of times playing back) on a new score, but then it starts sticking on trills after that. I've gone through all the details in the Optimization pdf, have downloaded and re-installed all soundset-related stuff, and pretty everything else I can think of. I'm not sure this is true, but it seems to be connected to time signature changes and/or the addition of fermatas and other time-related alterations to the score (that is, things that change the absolute temporal location of the articulation changes)... but I'm really not sure about that...

It's been doing this for quite a while, actually, and I've just ignored it thus far, but I really have to get this working now. I have a couple of big projects starting **now** and I really need to stop fighting with this...

I'm unbelievably frustarted by Sibelius+VSL at this stage. Though, honestly, I'm not at all sure that this is VSL's problem. It's just that I have zero faith that Avid will fix it. (Please, please, Daniel et al. at Steinberg, get us something that we can use soon!) Since version 7 I've developed a deep and passionate hatred for Sibelius, but I'm totally tied in at this point... ugh... (that is, until Steinberg comes out with their offering)

But if anybody out there has had this problem and actually found a relaible fix... well... you may just save my life!

  • Hello jbm!

In the meantime I was able to reproduce this problem and reported it to the Sibelius team.
To me it seems to come from a new bug with the trill symbol that was introduced with Sibelius 7.5. As far as I can see it has nothing to do with our Sound Sets or House Style. The problem doesn't come up with Sibelius 7.1.3. In the meantime I would exclude trill symbols from playback with the Sibelius Inspector (uncheck Play on pass 1) or go back to Sibelius 7.1.3. I'm sorry that I don't have better news on this matter.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thanks for the reply. I didn' think there was anything VSL could do about it as it seemed pretty clearly to be a Sibelius bug. Interesting to know that 7.1.3 works... (I may look into a temporary downgrade.)

  • Hi,

    Thanks everybody for answers!

  • Hi, I'm also trying to get string articulations to work properly within Sibelius 7.5: I have four volumes of the VE Special Edition. In a string quintet, say, with Ch 1 - 5 = V1, V2, Vla, Cell, Bass (the usual arrangement) and after setting up all the instruments in Sibelius and after selecting the Vienna House Style (as noted in your "Optimizing" guide) no matter what I do, I can't get the articulations to read accurately at all.

Stacatto (or stacc, it doesn't matter) plays incorrectly. "Con sordino" triggers tremolo!

Okay, maybe you guys mis-mapped some of the keyswitches. Fair enough. S&*t happens, but it there a way I can get into the actual dictionary definitions and correct these mistakes?

After spending all this money on Vienna Instruments, I'm very disappointed that "marriage" between your two companies isn't better organized or more intuitive and easy to set up and use.

Please help or direct me to on line help? Thank you!

  • Hello oburdick!

It can have different reasons why articulation changes don't work as supposed. Please note that for a String quintet you will need the Sibelius Solo Strings instruments in your score (2x Solo Violin, Solo Viola, Solo Violoncello, Solo Contrabass). The ensemble instruments (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, ...) have different Sound IDs and so articulation changes will not work correctly in combination with the Solo Strings programs on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page. If that was not the reason for your problem, please check the "Troubleshooting" section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual. You will find more possible reasons and solutions for your problem there.
