    Hi all.

    I'm working with a music media company to remake some of the great pieces of classical music.

    We have worked with large orchestras in big famous studios, but one of the very few things we haven't done live is organ.
    I know that I'll be able to use the VSL organ for large sounds like the Hallelujah Chorus, but I also need to effect a baroque style small organ - for things like Dido's lament.

    I've been trialling Hauptwerk for organ, but its so terribly complex for what we are trying to do, and doesn't work in ProTools without using Ensemble.... so it's just too complex for what we are trying to achieve.

    So - for anyone that's used this product: Can i effect a baroque organ, or will i need to purchase this for large sounding church organ, and a different product for a small baroque organ. Given that I will purchase this anyway, if this isn't the right product for baroque organ replication, are there any other recommendations to go alongside this?

    Hi David,

    Vienna Konzerthaus Organ offers ready-made registrations as well as all its individual stops. In addition, you can switch off the natural reverb tail of the organ, making it a seemingly dry and therefore highly versatile instrument.

    Assuming that you should be able to find at least _some_ of the typical "baroque" stops, you could very well get away with the Konzerthaus Organ alone.

    You could also take a look at the Harmonium for additional, organ-like colors:

    Actually I am aware of your policy, but since I'm already owner of the Konzerthausorgan and the OP apparently will be soon anyway, I considered it a minor offence, especially since the link was to a discontinued product andthus for information purposes only.  As a professional organ player myself, I would be hard pressed to recommend the KHO for baroque work (not to mention the Harmonium).  Of course, an organ of this size will always have stops that with a little effort can mimic older instruments, but the voicing and spatial qualities will make it a rather half hearted undertaking.

    Might I suggest asking your question in a different forum, one not developer owned?  You might be able to get some responses at vi-control, as discussions of organs do occur there on occasion.  Note that VSL sometimes has a presence there.

    For my own situation, at some point I hope to eventually purchase VSL's organ (will be awhile yet, as there are other priorities).  You have mentioned the complexities of Hauptwerk, and that is its biggest weakness (the strength is the wide variety of organs available in the format).  A few years ago Garritan released an organ, but IMO it was rather a conglomeration of a number of different things and not very authentic for anything.  Sound quality seemed less than ideal. 

    In the end, having looked at both Hauptwerk and VSL, while having a bit less flexibility in terms of ease of creating stop combinations VSL struck me as having the overall advantages. 

    When you purchase VSL's organ, please strongly consider also getting VI Pro.  The additional number of slots per articulation compared to the free player, would greatly facilitate the creation of custom registrations, and significantly increases the flexibility of the instrument.

    Note that I played organ a bit many years (decades) ago, but wasn't that good.

    If you read my message again you will see that I didn't "recommend" the Vienna Konzerthaus Organ for baroque work. I tried to point out ways for the original poster to achieve his goals with the tools at hand - especially regarding the "spatial qualities" you mention.

    Hello, I produced an Organ Concerto from Handel.

    You will find it here on this site at http://www.vsl.co.at/en/MUSIC

    Have a look at "Handel".

    Even if the Concert Organ has a very good "agility" and you also can switch off the release samples I believe ther are suitable organs for playing baroque music.
