  • Glitch in MIR Pro?

Hey guys, First post here, although I've been browsing these forums for a while now. Lots of nice folks here. Let me introduce myself as a beginner with making music with "real" samples on the computer. I say real samples because what I've used before have been cheap synths and default DAW instruments. Just this summer I finally caved and purchased the Special Editions and Dimension brass and strings. I also picked up MIR Pro to pair well with these samples. So far I'm working on a 007 track, using these samples and MIR for the first time. Super fun stuff.

I'm getting an intermittent issue and I'd like to hear some feedback from the pros. So far, my project is now packed with about 45 tracks, all feeding into MIR. I'm using the full license of MIR. I've been noticing this issue only now as my tracks are starting to build up and project is getting bigger and bigger.

Here's the main issue: As I create a new instrument and assign MIR as a plugin, I'm tweaking the natural volume slider and wet/dry ratio slider to my liking to get the perfect sound. I play it and even record it, all sounds good. Now let's say I were to play the song from the beginning. As soon as it reaches this new instrument that just I created, the volume and tone of the instrument are all out of whack (usually too loud and very tinny). This only happens sometimes, by random. I notice that if I turn the MIR plugin off, and back on, it will usually go back to it's original volume and tone that I originally set it at. Sometimes it doesn't always go back, and I find myself turning the plugin on and off multiple times, skipping the song around different sections, play, pause, random volume sliding and player positioning later, it finally goes back to a similar place that I had it at originally.

This issue happens all the time and it's quite frustrating, I'm finding myself having to bounce out each instrument just so the tone doesn't keep changing. I didn't notice this when I first started the track with only 10-20ish instruments. Have you guys come across this issue? Am I maybe loading too many instruments into MIR? Or doing something stupid?

    Details:
-Mac Pro 2010, 2.8ghz quad core, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd drive with OS + samples, 1tb HD for logic projects.
    -Logic Pro X
-Running MIR pro as an FX plugin for each track
-MIR Pro settings: Latency: 0, Impulse Response Cache Size GB: 5.0

Thank you guys in advance. I appreciate any help I can get.

  • Welcome Jason,

    thanks for your kind words!

Sorry to hear about your problem. This one is completely new to me ... :-/ ... I assume that you've made sure that there are no hidden controller and/or automation lanes doing strange stuff in the background? Stuff like that has given me headaches with earlier versions of Logic.

One thing that crossed my mind when I read your system specs: What happens when you assign more latency to MIR Pro in its Preferences? Any size equal or larger than your audio system's latency will make sense.

Other than that I can just ask you to send a Logic project which shows this strange behaviour to . Please refer to this forum thread and include as many technical details as possible (OS version, MIR Pro build version, audio system, its driver version and settings, etc.). The VSL support team will look into it ASAP.

    Kind regards,

  • Hey Dietz,

Thanks for the quick response. I'll have to double check the automation on these tracks. One of the problem tracks is the vibraphone and I don't believe I did any sort of automation, but I'll dig in and see.

As far as the MIR Pro settings, I kind of don't know what I'm doing in there. Earlier I had crackles and pops, so I lowered the latency and upped the cache size. I will definitely give your suggestion a try with raising the latency a bit.

I will send that logic project to the email address you provided. I think it's good for them to see other possible problems that may be happening in there.

Other than that, everything else should be normal. I've made sure I have the latest MIR version installed for OSX.

  • Hi All,

I just wanted to follow up with an update about this particular problem. I raised my latency setting in MIR to 1024 and I haven't experienced the inconsistent playback issues.

I'm now getting that tiny sound ALL the time. So maybe it IS mixed properly but perhaps my velocity and expression envelopes are now all out of whack since I was referencing it to the other way. Or perhaps there is a bug with the vibraphone preset in MIR.

Either way, if anyone is experiencing inconsistent mixing issues, it seems to have something to do with the latency setting. I will report back if I notice anything new or if the problem comes up again.

    Cheers,

    Jason
