    I'm writing a piece that uses a tenor trombone fundamental or bell note, specifically the Ab 2 and a bit octaves below middle C. What VI includes this? Annoyingly, the bass trombone in the SE1 finishes at the A natural just above this! Or should I substitute a tuba just for this one note?

    I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do here exactly but how much further down will the pitch bend lever get you?

    The fully chromatic range of the tenor trombone finishes at the E natural just below the bass clef.  However, there are seven lower notes available starting from the Bb below that E natural (see http://andrewhugill.com/manuals/trombone/range.html).  These are known as "pedal" or "bell" notes.

    I was after the Ab pedal note.  I've realised I can cheat and use the lowest note of the Bass trombone (A natural) and bend it down a semitone using pitch bend of 4096.

    However, it appears that native samples for trombone pedal notes are missing from VSL SE1 - do they exist anywhere else?

    When you use a note even below the range of the bass trombone for a ttb fundamental you are more than cheating. The fundamental Ab of the tenor trombone is sitting a major seventh above the lowest A natural found in the bass trombone manual, so there is definitely no need to pitch bend.
