  • [SOLVED] VEP - I'm really trying, but I just don't get it

I've read the manual, I've watched the videos, and I'm still utterly confused as to how to actually work with it. I've got it installed and synced no problem - that all made sense. Now all I really want to do is load some channels in Logic and have them correspond to different instruments in VEP. That's how it's supposed to work right? I've done everything the video says to do and I've got nowhere. I play the first channel of the 16 in logic and every channel lights up and it won't play any other instrument in VEP - just the first one (no matter what input I use). I've been using logic for over a decade but never in this way so I'm just so confused. If someone can say in the simplest language possible how to do a basic two instrument setup between the two machines (hopefully I can take it from there) I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance (sorry if this has been posted before - there doesn't appear to be a search function in these forums)

  • Set all of the instruments in VE to receive on the same channel. Do they play now? If so the error is probably in the MIDI routing.

Route each instrument to the same output as number 1, and see if that works. If so the error is probably in the audio routing.

Check that you're not mixing up the MIDI port with the channel number -that can be done very easily [:)]

  • Thanks John, I'll check all that out and hopefully I'll get that eureka moment!

  • From an instrumental channel, connect to VE Pro checking the "multitimbral" box. Or start your project instantiating a multitimbral instrument track.
Now, 16 of these tracks will launch, assigned by default 1-16. In VE Pro make the correspondence in the MIDI channel assignments per your instruments.

Now, even though more than one port isn't going to happen normally per the AU protocol, you will nonetheless see more than one in VE Pro; two boxes, the one on the left is MIDI Port #. May as well go with '1' there and assign the next box, that is the MIDI channel #.

If you do not specify multimbral I expect you aren't going to have more than one channel in VE Pro connect at one time.

  • This sounds more like a MIDI routing issue.  Check in VEP to see if all of your channels are set to MIDI OMNI, or multitimbral, or words to that effect.

Are you using a sequencer or notation software?

If a sequencer (DAW) then make sure the channels in VEP are set to the corresponding output channels in your sequencer.

Are you new to MIDI?  This stuff isn't explained in the videos because it's generally assumed to be common knowledge for people who work with MIDI on a consistant basis.

If all else fails then simply turn off all of the unused channels in VEP then whatever is triggered in your Sequencer/Notation software will only play on that one active channel.  Bounce the track to audio then turn on the next channel (matrix, instrument)

  • Thanks to everyone for their help. I've gone through all the suggestions and watched even more videos to see if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've set up my system exactly as it suggests here (I'm using logic x and vep 5 but it's the same idea): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SpMl-cCwd10 And I still don't seem to able to trigger any sound that is not on midi input 1. ie. if I have more than one instrument loaded in VEP and I set them all to midi channel 1 they all play at once - and in logic all 16 channels light up. When I set an instrument in VEP to midi channel 2 and go back to logic and play the second channel in logic (set correctly as per the multitimbral tick box) I get nothing. I'm sure it's simple but I'm losing so much time trying to find out what it is. Thanks again.

  • I don't know. There isn't more to it than you have been informed of.

It could be a coincidence it's the next instrument to VE Pro that doesn't sound, such as that one isn't getting a note-on on a key with any sample to trigger. I don't know. I don't actually use Logic for VE Pro, I connected to other than Logic's instruments for the first time yesterday to be sure of what I told you. As though a complete newb.

  • Hi ronmac,

You can send your Logic File as a zip file to , with a short reference to this thread. We´ll take a look.

    Best,

  • Hello ronmac,

Unfortunately, I don´t have the libraries you are using in Play and Kontakt installed on my computers, but I can actually not reproduce your problem here with what I have at my disposal...

Please remember that you are sending the MIDI signals for Kontakt (Instr 2) on MIDI channel 2 in Logic, so you will have to set the instrument to receive on channel two in Kontakt!

I have also just replied to your email support request and have attached a screenshot there...

    Cheers, Marnix

  • Thank you Marnix - your screenshot reply has solved my problem. I knew it would be something obvious (once it was pointed out of course!) It turns out all I needed to do was set the actual instruments (kontakt etc...) to match the midi output channels from logic - I thought setting the correct channel in VEP was enough but there is an extra step involved. Like I say, obvious to everyone here no doubt but it's something I've never had to touch before when working inside logic. Sorry for chewing up everyone's time and thank you all for your help - now finally it's time to make some music. :-)
