    Here are my expectations :

    * I would love to see an Extended Appassionata Strings (But I'm not too optimistic this will ever happen).

Unless I misunderstand you, this is already available:

Oh.. My mistake. I meant additional new content/articualtions to be released for Appas.Strings.

  • more velocity layers, please.

  • My expectations (or Wishes)

A new VE (Pro) major version with:

-Tabbed interface (categorie grouping, folder...) and hidding tracks option

-improved mixer (drag & drop for sends copy paste, built-in EQ and Compressor with graph)

-Automation set up improvements (ability to move assignements, automaticaly select a free parameter when adding a new assigment)

    On VI Pro side

I wish there will be parameter automation for VXF, CXF, Volume, Keyswitching... This way we can use bi-directional automation and use some control surface with VIP.

But I'm pretty sure VSL will come up with something great and unexpected as always.

    Fred

  • I think the VSL team have probably earned some time off after a decade of such hard work! I'm quite happy to wait until they announce their next move.

To try to guess what that might be: Strings and Brass both have Dimension libraries, and Herb has previously said it wouldn't be necessary for the Woodwinds. I doubt Dimension Choirs would be technically possible, but I've been wrong before. About the only gap in the VSL arsenal across the orchestral spectrum is solo singers, though again that could be very difficult to achieve realistically.

Another direction might be period instruments, like the Ophecleide and the Serpent, or ethnic instruments like the sitar, the erhu and the ocarina.

  • Or, for a new "classical" collection what about a full line of specialty instruments used by that (in)famous baroque composer, PDQ Bach (1807-1742 [IIRC])?  Think of it, the wealth of articulations for the upside down slide reed music stand, the possible articulations for double reeds minus the oboes or bassoons, not to mention numerous other specialty instruments.

  • I picture the VSL team reading this thread, laughing, their fingers hovering tantalizingly over the "RELEASE" button of another incredible unique product we haven't even come close to guessing.

    Hahah... Could it be :  Dimension-Banjos ... a 12 Banjo Ensemble  [:P]

  • I read that Herb agreed in Dimension Strings 2 con sord. and Dimension Brass Extended muted Brass. So I think this comes next.

Software? A Upgrade especially for the Vienna Suite is really necessary. I still miss the Transient Designer and a Noisegate. A Channelstrip like in Cubase would be the ultimate Killerfeature. I like All in One concepts!!!

But where Did you hear or read that Herb said Dimension Wood is not necessary? I totally disagree in this.

The Choir ... Hmmmm ... forget what the VSL-Poster shows ... I think after all the years they droped the Development.

    greetings Lars

  • I don't remember Herb himself specifically saying that Dimension Woodwinds is not necessary, but I do remember the general consensus being that there are already two flutes, two bassoons, two oboes, etc so nobody really seemed to think that more than that would be necessary.  Also woodwinds are very forgiving when you use the "transoposition" method so that makes four instruments very easy to come by.

  • Please add 'Dietzmix' button to VEPPro which analyses my mix then makes it sound like it would have done had Dietz mixed it.

Please add 'Beat Kaufmann' button to VIPro which analyses my musical phrases and selects the articulations for each note that Beat would have done.

Please write a 'Guy Bacos' plugin for my sequencer for those times when I get writers' block.

    Thank you.

Ha! I could point you to mixes I did which would make you reconsider that wish. ;-D

I find that hard to believe [:)]

  • Dietz have done Mirx - and that is, in my view, much closer than anyone else to "Pretty Mix Switch" :)

  • Apologies, I got my wires crossed somewhere, I vaguely remember hearing somewhere on here that Dimension Woodwinds wouldn't be necessary, and must have confused that with Herb's comments in the Dimension Strings interview about the differences in chord arrangements for woodwinds.

All I could suggest is that I'd love to see one or two video tutorials with Guy taking us through the process of making one of his demos, from start to finish, so that we could see not just articulation choices, but also mixing and workflow, and I could hopefully work out why his pieces sound so much better than mine...

I didn't mean to imply that Herb never said this, apologies! Just that I don't recall the source of the comments we're discussing.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if they finally released the strings as DL Insturments.  They've covered pretty much everything from the major collections to individual instruments, so I'm feeling like it might be time for the Solo Strings to become DL Instruments.

  • As far as wish-lists go... some extended techniques for any of the string libraries would be a lovely evolution. And with respect to a "Beat Kaufmann" switch, an algorithm, or algorithms, for analyzing phrases for figures, period structure, arsis-thesis structures, etc. might provide a way to auto-assign articulations. A learning system could infer a composer's style and provide custom assignments based analysis of previous works and their signatures, a la the work of David Cope. None of this is science fiction anymore!
