  • Which best Solo string option with Notion 4?

Dear Notion 4 and VSL users!

This is my DILEMMA! :?  (I copied this post on Vienna instrument libraries, as a part might be about the difference between SE and Instruments lubrary)

This is a long time that I have been waiting for a solo cello or solo double bass string from VSL... things that will not be available, unfortunately... :(
Also today it seems to me that I have two choices at nearly the same price (275€ and 260€), to get those two solo strings instruments:
    - SOLO STRINGS I
    or
    - SE Vol.1 Strings + SE Vol 1 Strings PLUS
I only care about those two instruments cello solo and double bass solo.

I only care about those two instruments cello solo and double bass solo, also my only use will be Inside Notion 4 and its existing presets.
I only need the samples that will be effectively in use Inside N4 matrix/preset, but it is impossible to understand which solution is best: SE strings vol1 and its extension SE strings vol1 plus? or solo strings I ?

I would prefer to take SE/SEplus strings if the N4 presets only use the samples of SE.
However, I would prefer to take Solo Strings I even if N4 will not use all additional samples in its preset if the samples that are in use have more dynamics steps (for exemple if it has 12 sample dynamics instead of 8 sample dynamics). I am not sur if this is the case... but I can't find more information on this.

thank you very much in advance!

  • Hello MarsOne!

Notion 4 is prepared to work with our Special Edition and Special Edition PLUS volumes, as well as the Vienna Choir. For these libraries there are Notion Playback rules that take care of automatic articulation changes according to the notation marks in the score. Our other Instrument collections could be used with Notion too, but there are no Playback rules, so the Notion notation marks will not make the Vienna Instruments switch articulations.

In your case I recommend getting the Special Edition Sections Vol. 1 Strings and Vol. 1 Strings PLUS.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thank you very much Andrea,

Yes, I want to keep the Notion playback rules!

I already experience successfully the reuse inside Notion 4 of some "SE instruments presets", that I latter edit to replace missing SE patch and replace them with patch from some instruments collection ( i do not own SE but mostly single instruments libraries).

I recall having read that SE patch had somewhat less dynamics samples and alternation than a traditional "Non-SE VSL library".

I have download the PDF description of SE and Solo strings, and find that this is the case here too...!

so I guess since I know how to fix my notion's preset and matrix to replace missing SE patch, I would take benefit of more rich patches of Instruments collections? [:)]

  • Hi MarsOne!

Yes, it's possible to load the Notion Special Edition presets, replace the patches with patches from the Instrument Collections and this way benefit from the higher number of velocity layers and repetitions.

    Best,
    Andi

  • This the method I use, and it works quite well...

Just be sure to backup your modified Notion VSL Instruemnts, as they are sometime overwritten by Notion updates.

  • just bought the bundle Solo String I and II... and downloading! I am in hurry to test it! [:D]

I was convinced by the use of more samples and alternations of the solo-strings patch...

thanks all of you for your help![H]
