  • which is the best solution for Solo Cello and Solo Double Bass Strings?

    Dear support,

    DILEMMA! :?

This is a long time that I have been waiting for a solo cello or solo double bass string from VSL... things that will not be available, unfortunately... :(
Also today it seems to me that I have two choices at nearly the same price (275€ and 260€), to get those two solo strings instruments:
    - SOLO STRINGS I
    or
    - SE Vol.1 Strings + SE Vol 1 Strings PLUS
I only care about those two instruments cello solo and double bass solo.

I will use those instruments thru Notion 4 presets and matrix (that might not use all extra samples/articulation combinaison of a instrument collections library).
However, I would prefer to take Solo Strings I even if Notion 4 presets/matrix will not use all additional samples if the samples that are in use have more dynamics steps (for exemple if it has 12 sample dynamics instead of 8 sample dynamics).

I am not sur if this is the case... but I can't find more information on this (maybe I am wrong and/or confused with other librairies, but is SE libraries has less dynamics than an instrument collection?).

thank you very much in advance!

I have the first SE Full library and I have Solo Strings I.  I never use the SE anymore only Solo Strings.  In my experience, the Vienna Player software is easier to work with for the specific libraries then trying to create a convincing passage with the limited solo string samples available on my SE collection. It's not impossible to create a convincing passage with SE it just takes a little more work (MIDI editing).  Your experience may be different.

If you're only interested in strings and not any other instrments then I would go for the Solo Strings I Standard, at least, but the full library would be better.

If you think the other instruments would interest you later on and you're on a tight budget, then go for the SE collections.

  • Hello MarsOne!

I answered to your post on the notation forum as well. Please don't make double posts next time.

Notion 4 is prepared to work with our Special Edition and Special Edition PLUS volumes, as well as the Vienna Choir. For these libraries there are Notion Playback rules that take care of automatic articulation changes according to the notation marks in the score. Our other Instrument collections could be used with Notion too, but there are no Playback rules, so the Notion notation marks will not make the Vienna Instruments switch articulations.

In your case I recommend getting the Special Edition Sections Vol. 1 Strings and Vol. 1 Strings PLUS.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thank you Jasensmith! Andreas (I reply you on the other post... sorry for the confusion)...

after various research and help from differents users, I found that effectiively Solo Strings have mores samples for the same patch.

    ex:

    * In VI_SOLOSTRINGS 1, a violin staccato is the patch number "01 VI_Staccato" that includes 4 velocity layers and 4 alternations for a total of 408 samples and 25MB of RAM.
    * in VI_Special_Editions, a violin staccato is a patch number "01S VI staccato" that includes 3 velocity layers and 2 alternations for a total of 156 samples and 9MB of RAM.

in my case, I think i will prefer the richest patches of Solo-Strings I  toward the more numerous instrulments of the VSL SE string volumes 1+2.
