Thanks for your reply. The first note in question isn't very long - less than two seconds in fact. And it strikes me as somewhat odd that a sound continues even if there was a clear note-off command. Seems to be a bug to me. Also that a note starts with a legato transition when there's no note-overlap.

It can be worked around through editing the samples chosen (e. g. switch to a long detaché for the first note) and the cc data (draw a dip at the beginning of the second note so the legato transition plays back more quietly). But it's more time consuming than it would have to be. If there are plans for an update it would be nice if this could be looked into.

Posting a MIDI file would be much more useful than an audio file. Plesase state what patches are being used as well.

That's one of the strongest examples I found. The third note in that example has a very distinct legato transition at the beginning (at least on my system). Patches used were:

VA-P4_G_perf-leg_Vib

VA-P5_C_perf-leg_espr

VA-P6_D_perf-leg_Vib

OK, I can't hear anything wrong on my system, other than the Mod wheel coming back up slightly too early for the second phrase. I certainly don't hear an errant transition, so I would suggest that there is something wrong with either your Preset, or maybe your keyboard is sending sustain messages when it shouldn't.

Maybe I do need to hear an audio file......

I was curious, so downloaded your midi file.  It opened in Sibelius...  You say that there's a legato transition into note #3.  In looking at the part, the G note overlaps the E note.  A legato transition would be played.  I would expect that.

Not sure if you use Finale or Sibelius to write and it plays your VSL samples from there, but I don't.  I record my parts in my DAW, and perform accordingly.  Any time I have a transition I don't want, I just shorten the preceeding note.   When I'm recording, I don't really care what it looks like, just how it sounds.  I make the edit and move on.

But, if you look on the Advanced tab on the Advanced view, you'll see that the Interval Threshold is 50ms on a factory patch.  If you double-click the number field you can change it.  Maybe lowering the thresholds would get you the behaviour you're looking for.  You'd need to change it for all of the Dim Vlas then...

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Turns out DG was right: there's a problem with my sustain pedal, sending signals when it shouldn't. So blame it on user stupidity. In any case it's not a problem with Dimension Strings whatsoever. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

A general information about triggering the legato-sound:

For getting a new start with legato samples you need to have a gap of >50ms between the last midi note off (end of the note) and the next note.

An even shorter gap triggers the legato sound between the two notes.

If you need to go closer than 50ms to the following note you stop <50ms before and hold it with CC64 as close as you need to go.

This was the way with libraries before the Dimensions.

Unfortunately I don't know whether this is still the case with the dimension strings or not (not tried).
