    I have a computer bought in 2009 that has 8GB of RAM and that is the maximum RAM capacity. I own SE Vol 1 and VI Pro 2 and so far that has run OK. I want to add the PLUS articulation expansion for Vol 1 at some point, but I'm wondering if the additional patches could cause me to start having problems. Is there reason for concern here, or does adding PLUS not really increase my RAM requirements?

    With 8 gigs of RAM you could actually run 1, 1 Plus, 2, and 2 Plus at the same time.  You should not have any problem running just SE 1 and SE 1 Plus.  FWIW, I think you will find the addition of the Plus articulations to be helpful in creating more realistic results, as the Plus portion adds some very useful articulations.

    A couple of things. First, I do run some CPU-light effects like Virtual Sound Stage on every track. Just a few tracks of MIRx (I downloaded the trial) proved too much for my system. I also run Valhalla Room or Cubase's verb on a group bus. I probably will also make judicious use of EQ. Also, my computer is not DAW-dedicated.

    I know I'm going to have to get a new computer to run the Vienna Suite and MIRx, which I intend to do eventually, but I'd like to invest in SEv1PLUS sooner rather than wait for that...thus my question.

    Just a couple of ideas. Adding SE1+ shouldn't tax your system much (if at all).

    You could create a new partition on your hard drive and have it dedicated to just your OS and music programs. And, I'm assumming you have your VSL libriaries on a seperate drive.

    If you haven't already, increase your latency to see if you get better performance.

    Thanks mschmitt. At this point I only have one hard drive. It wouldn't be very expensive or hard for me to add a second hard drive which I could then migrate when I replace my current computer.

    If your computer is a desktop then add a second internal drive for your sample libraries. A ssd would be the best.  Don't use it for recording onto. It's my understanding that ssd are very fast at reading but slow at writing. And, even if you don't use a ssd, but use a standard drive instead, you want to keep that drive only for playback of your samples.

    If your computer is a notebook, or doesn't have room for an additional internal hard drive, and you are forced to use an external drive, then an ssd might not help because the port you conecct it to could be a bottleneck. If you have anymore specific hardware questions, you could post them in the "General & Hardware" section of the forums. There are people there with a lot more technical knowledge than me.

    If you can afford it, even a 2nd 7200 rpm hard drive will help.  You should not have any problem running SE 1 and SE 1 Plus off of a 7200 rpm drive.  You will be able to do much more using a 2nd hard drive for your libraries.  To a point using just one hard drive can work, but the number of voices you can stream will be more limited as that one hard drive must do double duty.

    In an ideal world I would suggest at least 3 separate drives:

    1. A normal drive dedicated to OS and Program files.
    2. A sample drive for your libraries - Ideally an SSD, but this could be a 7200rpm spinning disk if you can't afford SSD, or if your machines architecture can't take advantage of the SDD speeds. (eg. MOBO doesn't support SATA 3 or SATA 6)
    3. A normal drive dedicated to recording (This should be 7200rpm) --> DAW project files and VSL project files, and any bounces and other audio files belong on this drive

    Keeping your project and audio files on a completely separate disc from the OS and Programs disk is important, as this ensures a dedicated controller and disk-cache when you're tracking or bouncing, so that OS and software operations don't interfere with these processes.

    For everyday (non-audio) stuff, you could depending on budget and the type of everyday work that you do, just create a separate partition on your OS drive (which will do nothing for performance, but will help with organising your files), or if your purse permits, get a 4th drive for this purpose. (Probably doesn't need to be anything too fancy for normal data. ie. You won't need an expensive 7200rpm drive for this.
