  • Piano Prelude with orchestral accompaniment using MirX. Need some comments on the mix please.

    Hi all,

I've done a piano prelude based on an orchestral one I did a while back, I've used Ivory PIano, and for the accompaniment, I've used all VSL and the MirX reverb software that goes with VI PRo player.

I'm just wanting some feedback re the accompaniment levels in comparison to the solo etc as I'm using headphones, and I don't have monitors. If anyone has the chance to give me some feedback when they have time, that would be great. It's pretty short. Only goes for about 2 minutes and 1 second.

I have not used anything for the instruments other than the MirX reverb, plus the orchestral loudness levels and also I have used the Vienna Suite Limiter on the audio output in Cubase, and that is all. I'm wondering if I should add other Vienna Suite effects such as the compressor, multiband etc, or if it is ok by itself.

The other question is, I've used the equalisation presets that come with MirX. Would adding one of the presets that come with the Main Vienna Suite equaliser intefere with the equalisation already on the presets? I'm quite happy with things how they are but with not having proper monitors, and only a set of headphones, I'm not really sure about the overall effect and whether these other main equalisation presets will not be good to use in conjunction with the VSuite main equalisation presets available. Anyone any thoughts on this?

thanks for any advice or info someone can share here if they do have the time to listen and comment.

    best,

    Steve :-)

My first thought was: To improve your monitoring situation is most likely much more important that any EQing or other processing. Without the possibility to actually _hear_ what you're doing, mixing (and making music in general) is much like painting in the dark. 😊

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Dietz,

thanks so much for that info. I do appreciate that. That's good advice. By the way, really enjoying using MirX. I know you and a lot of others put a lot of work into this and it's almost magic how everything seems to mold together without much work from me having to create placement and reverb etc.

Yes, a set of monitors is probably the next thing I need to put on the purchasing list so I can hear without thinking "in the dark" what it would sound like in a real life situation.

Thanks again for your advice and help here Dietz.

    best as always,

    Steve[:D]

  • Really like this. Especially the oboe. The strings sounded a little artificial at 28-31 seconds (maybe that's because of my headphones though). Possibly add some reverb/VSL Exciter to that bit.

(Some advice/praise from a noob who may not know what he's talking about [:)]. Do with it as you wish.)

  • Hi YacobW,

thank you for your feedback and taking the time to listen. Much appreciated! Yes, I'll definitely have a look at this section you are mentioning. It's still a work in progress and I'm still editing the piano part to make it sound a little better.

I'll try a bit of the exciter to the string section you mentioned plus review it and see if I can improve it.

    thanks and best,

    Steve :-)
