I'm running a Desktop Pro 3,1 with 16Gbs of RAM. I am running OS X v 10.8.5. I have a separate external hard drive for my VSL library - it's running off of Firewire 800. I am not playing very many notes and i keep getting dropouts. I am with a very large setup, including 8 fully loaded instance of Dimension Violins with each instance having 7 options, and all the cells are enabled. I only have 2 threads dedicated to the Ensemble Pro. My DAW is MOTU's Digital Performer, version 8. 0.5. Also, running Altiverb 7 on a bus. I have never had dropouts before but this is by far the largest preset I have ever used. What can you suggest to minimize the dropouts as there are way too many to record with. Thanks!

There's nothing else you can think of before having to spend a ton of dough on an SSD?

It sounds like a disc problem. I don't think your Firewire is fast enough. I would recommend upgrading to SSD when using Dimension Strings.

Try setting up an equally big template without Dimension Strings (it doesn't matter what instruments). Does that still cause problems?
The reason that I'm suggesting the discs to be a problem is that I can run a full orchestra with no problem until I put Dimension Strings into the equation. Then I end up with the same issues as you. The only other things that you can try is to put the sections on different drives.
