All VSL apart from the snare, which is from London Orchestral Percussion, and the trumpets, horns and trombones are from Project SAM. For loud stuff, I prefer SAM. For softer stuff, VSL wins.

    Thanks [:D]

  • This is excellent - is this your own composition? It has a strong rhythmic drive and big sound. Also, another one of those "No one will ever know" cues.

    Thanks William,

It is my own composition. The player gets attacked by some enemy fighters [:D]

  • Once again, a very impressive and realistic sound! Keep 'em coming.

Did you "play" the repeated brass figurations or is there a repeated notes patch in Sam Brass?

What are you using for reverb? Also are you EQ-ing your strings?

    Thanks,
    Jay

Sam trumpets has a few patches with release triggers that allow some pretty effective repititions, they are like the VSL repetitions, only without the Performance tool, so they aren't as versatile out of the box (so yes, the two fast repetitions at the start are recorded staccato's with release trigger).

But I often end up using normal stacc's and other patches as well. <EDIT>I don't EQ, I don't really know much about that so I've stayed away from it for the most part. Reverb is the gigastudio built in reverb.

Release triggers are so important! some of my repetitions might not sound so great if isolated (in which case, i would use another method)... but for fast passages in loud stuff like this.. i don't really bother with anything fancy. You can get away with normal staccato's if you do it right.

    Hope that helps.

You had to be a very good pilot to fly a BF109 to it's maximum efficiency! So the enemy fighters are Hurricanes and Spitfires aye? [:P]

Very well put together piece James, once again. I get bored with saying this. It's either listen to this, which is preferable, or watch Olympic swimming.

No. Although that could be an option perhaps in the future [[[:D]]]

Oh by the way, I got another e-mail that came back after thirty days saying that it was undeliverable to you... just so you know that I wasn't ignoring you [[[:D]]] You having trouble with your e-mail?

  • Well, this sounds very professional, if you understand what I mean...
But I donĀ“t like the mix, itĀ“s very muddy. A good mix could improve it by two degrees. Especially the reverb sucks (literally).
This makes me very curious to the project sam brass. It indeed sounds more integrated than what IĀ“m used from VSL.
Why didnĀ“t you use VSL snare?

    Hi Mathis,

Yes, the reverb is my least favourite thing that I have right now (the built in-reverb NFX that comes with gigastudio)... people often say that it sounds muddy, i'm waiting for giga 3 to come out with it's spanky convoluted stuff. Of course, it may very well be that I'm not mixing very well, and thats what causes it to sound muddy rather than blaming giga's verb. [:D]

I can certainly not claim to know much about mixing, I just experiment. [;)]
Which reverb do you guys use currently out of curiosity?

I love the VSL snares, but on this occasion, I just prefered the timbre of the LOP one. It just depends how I feel at the time really.

<EDIT> Oops, modified one of my post's above... made a mistake, I meant I don't use EQ, not reverb.

Sorry about that. Didn't realize. Probably because my email thingy was full and I forget to empty it sometimes James. Should be OK now and there's no trouble. Always good to hear from you of course! [[:D]]

Reverb wise, I guess you'll be waiting for Gigapulse? That should be fun. Then later, there will be MIR. I was going to suggest TC Powercore for not just reverb, but other tools that come with it, like Assimilator, but I suppose the new GS3 system will have a lot to offer on all this anyway.

Anyway, most enjoyable piece once again and have you noticed how Mathis' English is deteriorating? This is very worrying! [:P]

That reminds me! Where's Carter! I think I'm going to Get Carter!
    Mwwwwhahaaaa!

    Later
