  • Sibelius, VSL & Pro-Tools Working Together?

Hi.. Hope someone can help. Is the following software setup possible?

    - Use Sibelius to trigger the sounds in Vienna Ensemble, then route these sounds from Vienna into Pro-Tools on sepreate audio tracks.

We have spent a good week googling / forums / reading manuals etc.. but have not got it to work yet.

We are able to get Vienna & Pro-Tools working together (audio from Vienna routed into pro-tools), also able to get Sibelius & Vienna working and Sibelius & Pro-Tools working (via rewire)....

Just not all 3 at the same time.

Is anyone else using a similar setup?

Thanks in advance for any directions....

  • Hello info_28652!

I'm sorry to say that this is not possible. The Vienna Ensemble plugin can only route it's audio signals back to the host (in your case Sibelius). As far as I know Sibelius doesn't have any advanced audio routing possibilities.

    Best regards,

  • My DAW is Logic. I would like the VSL - Sibelius Sound Set MIDI to control my Logic digital audio workstation with the proper articulations written in the Sibelius score. This is a Game Changer for your company and Sibelius. The amazing usefulness of such a setup would increase VSL sales immensely. You would take over the market.

    I see two separate possibilities:

    1) Doesn't VE run in standalone mode? Why can't VE be modified to act as a bridge between a Vienna Service plugin attached to Sibelius and a Vienna Service plugin attached to the DAW?

    2) A free software called SoundFlower routes audio between applications. http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/

The Mac can route MIDI from Sibelius to the DAW via the Mac's virtual MIDI IAC Bus and forward it somewhere else at the same time. See Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup. I saw the a similar possibility on Windows ( ask me for the web page).

We would greatly appreciate if someone tries solutions on a test machine or communicates with Sibelius to get this resolved between the two of you.

I know I can connect VE to a Logic multi-timbral instrument with 16 channels and VE can send its audio outputs ( Net 1/ Net 2, Net 3/ Net 4, … ) to the multi-timbral aux channels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpMl-cCwd10 (Adding this video, or similar, to your VSL site would be useful, by the way)

I know I can connect Sibelius instruments to DAW channels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57afXavIO7Q

I know I can synchronize Sibelius and Logic with Rewire during playback http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCptzFTXN10

All I need is Sibelius Sound Set articulation MIDI sent to VE running in Logic

Thanks in advance for a solution you can find.

  • Hello Alex!

It's not possible technically to have two different hosts (like Sibelius and Logic) control the same Vienna Ensemble instance.

The Sibelius sound set technology, as well as MIDI routing in Sibelius, is not made by us. So this request should be directed at the Sibelius team. It has nothing to do with our software or samples.

If using multiple hardware outputs with Sibelius is important for you, you could simply use a standalone version of Vienna Ensemble via IAC bus instead of the plugin.

As you might know, there are other ways to bring your Sibelius project to Logic. You can export a MIDI file and save the VIframe(s) from your Sibelius project. This way the keyswitches and MIDI Control Changes generated by the sound set are included in the MIDI file.

    Best regards,
    Andi
