MIRx and Vienna Suite Power Panner, Reverb Tail

Hi!
I have a few questions to ask about MIRx and using it with string quartets, one about correctly using it with Vienna suite for positioning, and another about the reverb tail.   First I don't see any quartet specific positions, so say for a string quartet's violins, should I use the "vi 1 solo first char" for violin 1, and then for violin 2, use "vi 1 solo center clear" and apply the Power Panner to move violin 2 off axis to the left?   Or, should I use violin 2 with "vi 1 solo first char" (left of mic) and violin 1 with general purpose "solo left front" (even more left of mic) ?   Finally, if the reverb slider is set to 0, does this mean there that the signal only has the positioning + ER and no tail, so I can pipe that into my favourite algo reverb for the tail?   I currently have the trail of MIRx, it sounds amazing! I only wish I had not missed the mir24 offer a few months back, was moving countries couldn't get a working credit card in time >.>   Thanks!

What I had in mind for a string-quartet (or actually quintet) were the "1st chair" positions in Mozartsaal, most likely with the pre-EQ switched off, as its settings were mainly meant to be used for solo instruments as an additional, vivid voice within the respective ensemble. This will give you a Vi1 - Vla - CB - VCl - Vi2 setup. Another option is to use one of the center positions for Vi1 and the 1st chair of the Vi1-ensemble for Vi 2.

Personally I would try to stay away from additional panning as much as possible, because as in case with MR Pro, this will affect the enveloping of the instrument by the room considerably. But on the other hand: If it sounds right, it is right! :-)

MIRx' Dry/Wet slider set to 0 will give you the dry input signal, readily positioned, including the Pre-EQ when it's switched on. No room signal will be derived from MIR then - neither ERs nor tail, which is a hard-to-separate entity in case of MIR anyway.

Hi, Dietz!

I've been looking through the seating plans of the three venues in the MIRx manual, and I notice that all the strings are seated Vi1 - Vla - CB - VCI - Vi2. I'm afraid my ears have gotten used to having both the string quartet and string ensembles seated like in many (American) film scores: Vi1 - Vi2 - Vla - VCI and, in the case of ensembles, the basses somewhere behind the celli. Is there ANY chance that you will include presets for such a seating plan in a future update?

Well - the update is there, and it's called MIR Pro! ;-)

... but seriously: Of course there is the proverbial "Never say never", and it is very likely that we will add one preset or the other in the future, especially when new Vienna Instruments got released. But then, Herb Tucmandl (chief of VSL and driving force behind the idea of MIRx) has decided how the basic layout of the MIRx'ed orchestra should look like, and this is what it is now. You know, in the end I would make individual settings for each and every user of MIRx! ;-D

Well, Herb is the boss - so he got his "European Concert Hall" string seating plan. [6]

All the same, I will check out the demo for MIRx Teldex, just for the sake of the other orchestral sections. I have big hopes for my Special Edition woodwinds.

I just wondering because I thought having the 2nd vios to the right is a rather more uncommon setup.  In what areas is this setup more commonly used? The concerts I watched here in Germany usually had them to the left.
