• BEst Settings for String Quartet

I'm mixing a string quartet piece using VI Pro instruments and MIR Pro. Any suggestions for best rooms and settings?

  • Welcome mjmyers60,

I made some Venue Presets for MIR Pro with this (or a similar) application in mind. They could be good starting points for your own creations.

MIR Pro Venue Presets are available from your VSL User Area: ->  http://dl.vsl.co.at/downloader.aspx?ID=20963 (... please take a look at the ReadMe to learn how they are meant to be used: -> http://dl.vsl.co.at/downloader.aspx?ID=20962)

    Some examples:

    RoomPack 1 (Vienna Konzerthaus):

    - "Mozartsaal Mic 1+2 - Advanced Chamber Music Setup"

    - "Neuer Saal Mic 1 - Close Balance"

    - "Schubertsaal Mic 1 - Duet"

    RoomPack 2 (Studios & Soundstages):

    - "ORF Sendesaal Mic 2+4 - Warmth & Depth"

    - "ORF Studio 3 Control Room View Mic 1 - Typical Setup" (... this could sound even better with some MIRacle enhancment for a more embracing sound)

    RoomPack 4 (The Sage Gateshead):

    - "HallTwo Mic1+4 - Chamber Music (MIRacle enhanced)"

    - "NRFH Mic 1 - Closed Curtains (trimmed, quite dark)"

... and most notably, the "classical" choice: Vienna Konzerthaus, "Schubertsaal Mic 3 - Quartet" (... click on the the thumbnail below to see a screenshot):

Hint: Change the Main Microphone to the Conductor's position (1) or Position 2 for a more intimate sound, or use one of the Venue Presets which are already based on these Main Microphone positions.

... I hope these examples will get you started. :-)

    Kind regards,

  • Dietz, thanks, I've seen those, unfortunately I currently use MIR pro as a plug-in. I tried setting up VE Pro to try out one of your presets and quite frankly it sounded terrible. I'm sure that was my inexperience with using VE Pro, and I'd still like to explore them. I'm stubborn. :-) Is there any way they could be saved as Mir Pro settings files that I could load from the plug-in? Maybe I don't understand how they work, but it would be great to be able to load them from MIR without VE Pro involved. Michael

That's easy: You can save so-called "MIR Engine Projects" from VE Pro's "File > Vienna MIR Pro" dialog. These *.mirep-files will contain all Venue-specific data of MIR Pro in the current VI-Frame (... i.e. everything except Icon settings and routing, or in other words: no channel-data). These files can be accessed by the "File > Open" dialog of MIR Pro plug-in.

    HTH,

  •  I cannot imagine any of the Dietz presets sounding terrible, in fact the ones I have tried sound awesome.

All of the presets that I've tried in both overall and individual EQ settings and all the other tweaks are exactly what they were intended to be - perfect as starting points. Actually, one can use them almost without change a lot of times.

    Hehehe ... what I said. ;-D

Well -  in fact  I _can_ imagine that my presets sound terrible: I always hate what I came up with last week. 😛 ... In any case - thanks for the kind words, William. So creating thousands of presets for VSL's products isn't _completely_ futile, at least.

(... I'm writing that while taking a short break from working on several hundreds of settings for an upcoming product 😛 ...)

    Best,
