    Hi,

    I have a question re. the Kontakt Factory Lib VSL Triangle. If this isn't an appropriate place for that discussion, Paul or -whoever-, just let me know. The people @ the NI forum are, to say the least, not exactly 'product knowledgeable' with regard to VSL.

    Anyhoo...

    I -really- like the basic tones of the VSL triangle. I realise it was designed for concert music but I was hoping to use it in a jazz context and that means being able to do fast hand mutes. There is a mute in the Kontakt version but it doesn't exactly shut down the sound -fast- as one needs for rhythmic patterns in jazz. Obviously I can adjust the envelope. But perhaps I'm missing something

    SO: Does anyone have any MIDI examples of the triangle to demonstrate how patterns should be programmed---specifically the rapid on/off figures one would encounter in jazz?

    Hi there,

    try via velocity. The harder you hit, the shorter should sound...

    Try E1.

    Yeah... not working for me. I thought it might be that a 127 would trigger a mute but it doesn't. The manual says that E1-F1 = muted, but that also doesn't do it. It seems like Ab3 triggers a -slow- mute BUT it doesn't silence any other playing samples.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi JC. if you set Kontakt's 'Voices - Max' to 1, overhanging notes will be cut off by new notes. Alternatively, use a short release setting (click on the 'spanner' icon and select 'Modulation') and edit your sequences so no notes overlap.

    I don't have the Kontakt version, but in the VSL Percussion library (and in Special Edition), the triangle doesn't work great for Latin triangle patterns because the shorter damped notes sustain too long. However, with those libraries you can get a reasonable approximation by adjusting the release and note lengths (as described above) and playing a repeated pattern of an 8th note on C and two 16th notes on C# (C being the lowest-lying triangle sample on the keyboard), taking care to make the C# hits a little quieter than the C ones. I suspect the same sample mapping will have been used in the Kontakt version. HTH!

    P.S. An alternative rhythm pattern would be two 16th notes on C# followed by an 8th note on C [:)]

    Hi JC,

    I've got Kontakt version 5 and it works here (Legacy VSL Instruments/27 Percussion/Triangle1) with: E1 and F1, being F1 a bit longer in its shortness. E1 is slightly "tighter" if I hit the key without holding it (staccatissimo)...

    Thanks to you both. I'll give both your suggestions a try. I do have a triangle and can play the patterns I want, but  the VSL triangle sounds about 1,000% better so I'm hoping to use that if possible. (I think mine is actually from some kiddie orchestra.)

    FWIW: I'm trying to make patterns similar to the 70's TV show 'Baretta'. And if you know what I'm talking about? BOY ARE YOU OLD! :D
