    I read in a review that the SE patches are "cut-down versions of their Vienna Instruments equivalents with fewer velocity layers and samples spanning a tone rather than a semitone."

    If you look at www.vsl.co.at/en/211/1343/1289.vsl, it says "The Standard Library of a Single Instrument offers slightly more articulations than the same instrument included in the Vienna Special Editions. By adding the corresponding Extended Library, all Single Instruments become full-fledged Vienna Instruments, offering the complete samples and articulations on par with the ones of the big Vienna Instruments Collections."

    Since the Single Instruments are potentially on a par with the fully-fledged Vienna Instruments Collection, one can assume they have more velocity layers than SE. HTH!

    I wonder why there's no word about fewer velocity layers on any of the SE pages. Seems like a pretty important point.

    I think it was mentioned on the VSL site when SE first came out. The info is still there in the library manuals www.vsl.co.at/en/68/375/379/241.htm, which list velocity splits for every patch. If you read them, it's clear that SE patches use fewer velocities than the full collections.

    The recent news letter states the the Single Instruments offer "the complete set of samples and articulations as they appear on our big Vienna Instruments Collections."  I have not found this to be true for several that I have purchased.  In fact, only the Bb Trumpet was a complete set as in the VI Collection.  Has something changed?  Can I update mine and get the missing samples?

    Most VSL instruments have two versions, Standard Library and Full Library. This goes for collections as well--if you're getting the Solo Strings library for example you can get the Standard which has legatos, staccatos, longs, shorts, some dynamics, etc. or you can get Full which has performance trills, Sul Tasto, Zigane, etc. The Bb Trumpet comes in only one full version, there's no "Standard Library" option available at all, which is uncommon with VSL. If you buy the standard library version of Woodwinds I, you get exactly the same bassoon articulations you would get if you purchased the standard library version of the Bassoon Single Instrument. The way to buy literally every articulation available is to purchase the Full Edition, or if you already bought Standard, you can upgrade by purchasing the Extended Library which brings you up to "Full". Hopefully that answered your question!

    I wouldnt buy single instruments because a replacement can become very expensive (20 dollars per license). You are better off buying the collections you need.

     No, that is not right.

    I bought the super package which is everything in one package - but you actually get dozens of single licenses - so it's no different than buying them separately (apart from the cost saving).

    Ya but what do you mean by single licenses? Single license as for 1 license per collection? (Solo Strings I, Brass II etc...) or do you mean 1 license per instrument (Violin, Viola, Trumpet, Trombone etc...)? Because im thinking that a replacement (in case my dongle breaks) would be cheaper if I buy the collections instead.

    There are 2 licenses for most libraries - Standard and Extended, so for example with Solo Strings I, you will have a license for Standard and another for Extended,  then same again with Solo Strings 2 etc..

    The Super Package has about 40 licenses...

    it's best just to buy a new dongle every two years, to ensure it's always within warranty period.

    Ok I see. So even if I buy directly the full version I will have 2 licenses, standard / extended. How are the experiences here in vienna? I read somewhere that there is poor customer support is that true? Are there many who experience problem with broken or malfunctioning dongles or is this something that rarely happens? By the way, do the download instruments come in iso format or how do I install them?

    I don't think you could find any better customer service then VSL!

    They have their own download manager that retrives the compressed files and installs on your local system.  No ISO.

    I usually dont like to use other download managers. What you are saying means I cant install the products without it. So it also acts as a installer right? Do the ones that come with the harddisk and CDs also install that way?

    No that's not true. I never use the download manager to install, because I never download on the machine that I work on. You can either check the box to install, or not. Your choice.

    We have described the possibilities (downloading and installing on the same computer or transferring the download data to a different computer) in the Download Manager Manual, available on each Instruments Download page in the User Area. 

    This manual also includes screenshots so that you can see each step in the process.
