  • EXS and Freeze

    Maybe this is too early to ask this question but;
Looking at the new Freeze function in Logic 6, it seems to me that one could write a pretty big cue with just one PowerMac if you froze all the EXS tracks and unfroze only one or two that your working on actively.

Does anyone know if this is true or am I extending the freeze function as more than it can do.

For me (who only has one PowerMac and no giga boxes yet) this would be fantastic.

  • I have 3 Gigaboxes, but if this freeze function would really be working as burningchrome writes, I would happily change to the ESX24 VSL version and get rid of the PC's in order to just use my MAC(s). I am not a "Macoholic" [:)] , but they just give me less trouble. I am really happy to write this because today one of the PC's did crash 6 times in a row.....[8o|] [8o|] [8o|][8o|] [8o|] [8o|]

  • Iwan,

What OS do you use on your PCs ?

  • Two of them are running with XP and one with WIN98 SE. The one which crashed so much yesterday was an XP. After deleting and reinstalling all programs =Gigastudio + Performance Tool, it did stop crashing. The problem I have with the PC's, is that it is difficult to know why there is a problem. I do not fiddle around with them, they are configurated after Tascam, but they suddenly become ill. The Mac normally only does have problems, if you install third party extensions or exotic programs. But maybe Gigastudio is an exotic program [I] I do have a PC laptop as junk computer and it is working fine, but XP+no Gigastudio.

    Thanks

    Iwan

  • Yes, you can do that! The Freeze function makes a "harddisc-recording-copy" of your softsynth, softsampler or other power-sucking process and replaces the original recorded Soft-Instrument (in this case, if your running EXS24, that should work). So with the next play-action after a freeze-operation. you hear the same as before, but it plays a hardcopy. therefore you can´t change notes (but volume, pan etc. works) untill you "refreeze" that track.
practically you can work on your lines and when your ready with it you freeze it and has the whole power of your PC back to work on other lines. And because the harddisk-recording capability is much higher on modern machines as the processor-relatet tasks you have vitually more power.
(´till the moment you have to change the whole piece) [[;)]]

  • Hi folks,

Everyone seems very excited about this "freeze" function, but in fact, it's nothing new technology-wise. One can do this with any of the leading DAW-software packages, just not in a completely automated fashion.

So, this is only a UI convenience, really. Anyone can render tracks any time right now, and achieve exactly the same result, whether on EXS or any other sampling software.

I always strongly suggest that people outfit their GigaStudio machines with good lightpipe i/o, and their DAW machines with whatever amount of lightpipe i/o is required to connect all of the machines digitally. Once that is accomplished, the level of integration is very high and track/rendering management is extremely fast and easy.

Iwan, in my experience, plugin-type sampling software is not yet as efficient to use on large-footprint orchestral material. I think it's far more practical for pop/rhythm section work where ensemble sizes are much smaller. The multiple instances and management issues of a full-orchestration's track count is a real headache to me, vs. having 64 open MIDI-channels per GigaStudio machine. For my particular professional demands, I do not mind the additional investment in lightpipe capable hardware, because it's more profitable for me in the long run to save time and frustration when I'm composing. Also, for a given amount of processing power, I am still finding GigaStudio to be a far more capable performer with regards to polyphony and efficient use of a given amount of processing power.

    Best regards,
    Bruce

Bruce, then you might as well say that digital audio workstations and sequencers were nothing to get excited about, either, because we were able to do essentially the same thing back when we were recording to tape. [;)]

Any time technology makes it possible to do something faster and in a more transparent manner, plus offering the ability to anytime undo what you've just done, it IS a big deal. The ease and simplicity of Logic's Freeze function will ensure that people use it readily, and for them, it will greatly expand what can be done on one machine. Logic's new project manager adds even more power to this function.

Obviously, this feature will be copied by other manufacturers, but Emagic was first on the block with it. They deserve a moment in the sun.
