  • Disappointing Performance of VE Pro 5 and Logic...

After spending lots of hours setting my system up with the new VE Pro 5, I'm sorry to report very disappointing performance when connecting my MacBook Pro 2 Ghz/16 GB RAM to my new Win7 PC Build ( i7 Intel Core i7-3770K 3.4 Ghz Quad-Core w/16 GB RAM ). I'm extremely disappointed with the lag and lack of practical use with VE Pro 5 and Logic Pro 9. Sometimes my LAN connections are strong and work for awhile ; other times, it "flickers" on and off, or refuses to accurately chase Logic at all.

So much so, that I've disconnected the PC from Logic, as it completely slows my workflow down when waiting for VE Pro to "catch up". Connections between the two machines seem very unpredicatable, and oftentimes VE Pro will "invent" a new instance to connect to, eventhough I've saved my Metaframe, Project, and Instances within VE Pro. I've tried different Ethernet cables, and have indeed verified my LAN connection does work correctly.

Very frustrating and non-intuitive, so far... I have to put my use of VE Pro and it's integration with Logic and my Mac on the back-burner for awhile, as I haven't been able to get any work done waiting for the lag of VE Pro. Completely unusable right now, I'm sorry to say.

First off I don't work for VSL but sorry to hear your frustration. However I can promise that you are not even close to being the only one using Logic 9 and VE PRO as this is an extremely common combination and they don't have your problems. It sounds more like a setup issue or issue that is worth troubleshooting. I have used VE PRO since the day of release and never had your issues, only to show again that your problem is certainly solvable.

    1. You need to put information in your signature as to what you have installed, hardware, drivers, software versions etc. Without it, no one can help you with anything. Unless you are not looking for help, only to vent frustration 😊.

    2. Never rely on the "forums" to solve your answers when you have such technical or user related issues. The best thing to do is to write an email to support@vsl.co.at and it will autogenerate a ticket for you and they will begin helping you troubleshoot the problem. They are super friendly to deal with as well.

    3. Just in case the problem is their most current release which does seem to have a few little bugs going on, it might be most beneficial for you to uninstall your current version and download the previous version which are located at the botton the same page that has the new release and try those. I usually don't install the newest newest version until it's tested and I see no complaints. It seems some people are complaining of some strange things on the newest version. Possibly this is causing some/most/all of your grief. I myself run the version just before the most recent and I am having zero issues so maybe give that a try if possible.

Good luck resolving the issue that is specific to you and your setup. VSL can and will help you get it running if you give them the chance. And should this be a unique situation that they or no one on this forum has ever seen, just think of how much good you will be doing the community to point out something that no one else has seen yet, or confirms an already known issue 😊.

  • Thanks for the input and advice ; I'm sure there are many successful users of VE Pro and Logic, and I didn't mean to infer that it is an inferior product. I was merely reporting my experience to date, and hoping that some users with varying degrees of success, might share their settings and methods that ensure their success in using the product.

With regards to drivers, etc., - I'm not sure if there is an "optimum" driver available for my PC that would improve LAN performance. If there is indeed such a "golden" driver, I'd love to find out where it's uploaded at, and what the version / I.D. of it is. FWIW - I'm using the latest Ethernet controller driver that is on the Intel website. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Again - I haven't seen any documentation of just what the "right" driver for the PC is. I figured that since that driver is the latest one on the Intel site, that it should be capable of allowing the LAN transfer successfully with VE Pro. But again - I could be wrong. Hence my "venting" here on the Forum.

I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8 with the latest version of Logic Pro 9. Windows 7 on the PC. Again - all works fairly well sometimes, and othertimes, not. Very spotty. I figured that, like Logic itself, if it's working 70-80%, then things must be set correctly, or it wouldn't work at all, yes ? That's what I thought VE Pro would be - able to work "out of the box", so to speak. I'm finding that this is not my experience so far.

Yes - VE Pro 5 and Logic work for me. But not well, and not consistently.

Thanks again for the input, and again, no harm or foul intended by my post.

    Best,

    JT.

  • No offense taken, I was actually having fun responding to this one :).

As far as "the golden NIC driver", this will always be to me, the one that the "manufacturer of the PC or motherboard provides".  Not just some driver you find on a website, even if the chipset is made by them.  Is the NIC integrated with the motherboard?  Then make sure you get the driver from the Motherboard manufacturer.  Is it a seperate PCI-e type card?  Get that one from the card manufacturers website.

Do you have a "Swtich" in between the two computers?  If so, get rid of that link and plug them directly into eachother with a CAT6 cable (Direct MAC to PC connection with one cable).

Do you run any other software on these machines?  This is the point of putting what you have on both machines in your signature.  Maybe you have "Midi over LAN", or NEYFI or other "network" solutions running in the background that work over "wireless".  Turn off all of those things, including your wireless connections and see what results you get.

If you have seperate physical connections going to the internet unplug them all.  Literally remove all network connections except direct 1 to 1 connection from host to slave and see the results.  Don't forget to try the previous software version as I do see some minor complaints about the most up to date version.

Make sure you have the most up to date video drivers, audio drivers etc.  Even in the strangest of times, video drivers can cause behavior issues.

Do you by chance have any other DAW software just for sake of testing?  It seems that the complaints I do see on the forum about the newest version seem to be OS X, unless that's just coincidence.  At least that way you could say with complete certainty, it's Logic, or it's just OS X entirely at the moment.

Oh and lastly, be sure to do as I said above and put in a ticket with VSL support.  In many cases, this is how they solve entire global issues.  Sometimes they will write a "pre" updated fix and send it to you of which you can verify if it fixes your issues or not.  A beta per say.

Don't give up, the software is amazing and I would never leave home without it :).
