  • MIR String Profiles Question

I use all VSL strings and I run them through MIR Pro. My problem is that my computer is slow to change venues/mics when I have MIR profiles for each instrument. That's 4 different libraries (Appassionata, Orchestra, Chamber, and Solo) times 5 different instrument profiles (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass). What I have been doing is using a master string bus for each instrument, and assigning the Appassionata Strings profile by default. I switch the profile manually when I use other libraries-- such as Orchestral or Chamber Strings.

I was wondering how important the MIR profiles are for these different libraries. I can hear there are subtle changes, but I wonder how hard it is to recreate these changes using just stereo width, dry/wet, and volume. I'm trying to simplify my MIR setup so that I can make changes without having to wait too long for the changes to load.

    Thanks!

  • The individual Instrument Profiles for the different ensemble sizes are based on the same measured frequency profiles, of course. They differ most notably in their relative rotation towards MIR's Main Microphone. This is due to the fact that (say) Appassionata recordings where done with a completely different recording setup than e.g. Orchestral Strings.

Apart from that, there are differences in the supplied Character Presets, Natural Volume, standard stereo width, etc. (The manual contains a short paragraph covering all the aspects covered by MIR's Instrument Profiles, AFAIR.)

It goes without saying that there are vast differences between the four intrument types (violin, viola, cello, bass) within all ensemble-sizes. :-)

  • Cool, thanks Dietz. I wish there was some elegant way to A/B different setups, in particular I wish that I could adjust the secondary mic volume offset without having to reload. It's hard to get a good balance.

  • what is your setup ?
