  • Phasing Problems with Solo Flute/Basson

    Hi guys,
I was just checking out the flutes+bassons and there seems to be a phsing issue when you listen to them in stereo...when folded together the sound really changes even though I like it better fold together than in stereo. Its got that weird "out of phase" type of sound....
The horns and trumpet are fine...
Anybody realized the same thing ?

    Thanks

    Thor

  • Please mail the names of the samples as exactly as possible to Herb or me. We'll check that.

  • Hi Dietz,
I was talking about ALL the flute/bassoon patches...not just specific samples. One of your engineers emailed me and we worked it out.
Basically what I am experiencing is the fact that the woods are stereo miked and due to their nature of moving around while playing..etc..so the room info + dry sound cause that "out of phase" placement sound.
The workaround here is to fold together both sides and add artificial reverb...
I am still a fan of single miked woods or L C R miked woods...L,R being mostly room and C would be the dry signal...right on the player...that would puch your library into the terabytes realm..so...

    thanks

  • Ha! We will hit the Tera-Bytes anyway - the other problem is that there are no wide-spread sampler-platforms supporting more than two channels at the time being ...

  • "At the time being" is right - but already announced are both MachFive and Halion 2.0 doing multi-channel samplers. While Kontakt hasn't announced support for it, Kompakt certainly does it, as the QL Orchestra is based entirely on layering multiple channels together in real time. I doubt it will be long before EXS, Giga and Kontakt join that group.

I hope you guys aren't over-looking multi-channel development just because it's being adopted slowly by the big-guns in sampler software.
