  • trills with Vienna SE +

In Andreas' helpful guide to Optimising Sibelius playback, the soundset/dictionary is supposed to automatically switch between whole and half tone according to the diatonic surrounding when using the sampled string trills in SE Plus. I've not found this works (it defaults to semitone and cannot be altered whatever you do in the Inspector unless you change the dict. entry) and the only workaround is to manually add separate dictionary entries and lines for each type in Sibelius 7. I am using, to the best of my knowledge, the latest sounset and house style. Has anyone else had similar experiences -- curious if there is a known bug or anything I might be missing.

    thanks, David

  • Hello David!

If everything is set up correctly the trill should change automatically between halftone and wholetone trills. When you remove the check for "Diatonic" in the Inspector under Playback/Trill, you can set the half steps manually. There's no need to make any settings in the Dictionary. Please check the following settings:
    - Did you load the sound set "VE Special Edition PLUS"?
    - Did you make channel and program settings on the Sibelius/Manual Sound Sets tab for all instruments in your score?
    - Did you load the Special Edition PLUS matrices in Vienna Ensemble? These matrices are marked with a "+" at the end of the name.
    - If you have fiddled about with the outputs, Sound IDs or MIDI channels in the Sibelius mixer, reset all outputs to (Auto).

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi,

You know I set everything up correctly but then when I looked carefully at the mixer as per your last bit of advice, I noticed that for some bizarre reason my trumpet although set to the correct path of brass.trumpet.trumpet had a trombone in the header somewhere and was indeed playing a trombone sound when tested. Very odd as it's not the sort of thing i would change and it seemed correct in the Sibelius soundset setup and was also fine in the Vienna Ensemble ! Once I managed to get all the patch names to show correctly in the mixer with everything set to auto (as you correctly advise), the trils work as advertised. Reassuring! You have to be eagle-eyed with Sibelius as sometimes the slightest error can cause an entire setup to give bizarre results

    thanks,

    David
