  • Help choosing a PC slave

Hi guys. Time for getting a slave is coming up for my Mac Pro 8 core 2008. It's gonna be a PC with windows 7. As I'm not used to the PC world I'd appreciate any advice you can give me. I'm planning to use an orchestral template plus other instruments. My projects are usually 30 to 60 instrument tracks using VEP 5, Vienna Suite, EWQL PLAY, Kontakt instruments and some Omnisphere.

Here are my two main options (sorry, the pages are written in Spanish but I guess you won't have problems with the specs):

    http://www.mountain.es/epages/Mountain.sf/es_ES/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Store.Mountain/Products/OMPRODAWi7x

Boosted to 32 GB of RAM

    http://www.mountain.es/epages/Mountain.sf/es_ES/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Store.Mountain/Products/OMNEXTGEN

Boosted to 64 GB of RAM

The price difference will be around 900 euros, being the i7 ivy the cheapest one. Don't mind affording the difference but would want to know which one is more suitable and powerful although I think the sandy bridge will be better.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx!!!

  • I tried to follow the links but they both appear to land on the same page showing a laptop and tower.

Anyway, on average you can't go wrong with the stronger system. Perhaps you could provide the specs so we can help.

  • Hi Mike. Thnx 4 your answer. Here are the specs:

    i7 Ivy:

    Core i7 Ivy Bridge 3770K 3,5 GHz

    Asus Sabertooth Z77

8GB DDR3 1600 RAM Dual channel (expandable to 32 GB)

    SSD 120GB + HDD 1TB

    NVIDIA GeForce GT610 Silent

    i7 Sandy:

    Core i7 Sandy Bridge 3930K 3,2GHz

    Asus P9X79

    8GB DDR3 1600 RAM Quad Channel (expandable to 64GB)

    SSD 120GB + HDD 1TB

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX670

I haven't found any comparision nor benchmark about Ivy's performance handling audio applications, although this vendor does recommend it. But the fact that the Sandy Bridge has room for 64GB RAM quad channel -instead of the 32GD dual channel of the Ivy- makes the Sandy one more attractive.

    Thanks again :)

  • Looks like the Sandy is the way to go if infact you'll use 64gigs vs 32.

The Sandy also sports 6 cores vs 4.

    Better graphics card etc etc.

You say there's a 900 Euro price difference.

    What are the prices?

  • You will likely want more than 8 gigs of ram.  For the stuff you are planning on running that sounds rather low.  Depending on what you can afford at least go with 16 gigs (though depending on your templates 32 gigs might be needed).

Also, with sample streaming using SSD's for samples is a far better option than using them as o/s drives.  For a slave, if at all possible try to get a computer that has enough expansion capability that you could have more than two hard drives.  You will want to spread your libraries over multiple hard drives - with the o/s and programs still on their own drive.  If you are limited to just two drives, than using the SSD for the o/s would make sense, as you would need a lot more storage space for the samples.

  • Thanks guys :)

Here are the prices (Including upgrades, VAT...)

    i7 Ivy Bridge system

    1.139 eur (basic system)+120 eur (windows 7)+159eur (32GB RAM upgrade)+298eur (VAT) = 1.716eur

    i7 Sandy Bridge system

    1.749 eur (basic system)+120eur (windows 7)+349eur (64GB RAM upgrade)+466eur (VAT) = 2.683eur

Actually the difference is 967 eur

Here are the links again. Maybe I wrote something wrong the first time. Scroll down and you'll find a list of upgrade options

Yep. I'm planning to upgrade to 32 or 64 GB of RAM, depending on the system. Regarding drives I think it has room for up to 4 drives, so I have enough room for adding more. SSD are the way to go. I just wish they were cheaper [;)]

Thanks guys for your answers :)
