M.A.CHARPENTIER - TE DEUM
Hi everybody, a small personnal pleasure ... Always looking for baroque orchestra sound. Enjoy ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpTWQYhEm5Y&feature=plcp Philippe NEW VERSION (little faster ) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMtspR80XBw&feature=plcp

Hi Phillip
I like the interpretation and the sound. Congratulation.
If you want to come even closer to the realty you should a bit humanize the tempo - my opinion.
It seems that the tempo is constant through the whole piece - this uncover the computer behind this piece very soon.
So little ritardandos before new sequences are starting could improve this matter perhaps.
So as a Swiss I recomment a bit more (cheese) fondue with the tempo... [;)]
I hope not to hurt you with this feedback.

Hi Beat, thanks for listening. I'm happy you liked that. All the instruments have been recorded live. I have made a new version, little faster, and i put a small breathe at the beginning of each section (but very few: it is a "marche") Best Philippe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMtspR80XBw&feature=plcp

Hi Philippe,
another guilty pleasure! Which trumpets did you use here ? You got a great sound from and I really liked the definition of the trumpets within the arrangement and mix. Congrats and thanks for posting. How many of these do you have up your sleeve! Thoroughly enjoying hearing you breathe life back into some of your collection, it must be very rewarding and exciting.

This is a great piece. Also, the performance all sounds very well done. The only thing I wondered about is the trumpet used. I would like to hear it done with the VSL solo trumpet as a comparison to the Sample Modeling one. (Not to put in an order, but...) To me the trumpet sounded good, but a little bit like "Generic Trumpet." Which being Sample Modeling is exactly what it is... as opposed to the VSL solo trumpets which are so distinctive and have a realism that comes from the huge amount of articulations. Also, it seems to me the performance trill on the VSL solo trumpet would be perfect for this.

As information for the rest of the world outside Europe:
This has been - and still is - the music for common tv-programs here in Europe.
In the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties,... with this music...
Have fun

Hi Tom, hi William, thanks for your comments. As William said, the trumpet is the Sample Modeling. Alas, for VSL, i just have the trumpet of the Standard library, so ... I think i have to purchase the solo trumpet to make a good comparison ! I find William a little bit hard when he speaks about "generic trumpet" for the SM one. This instrument has much qualities, like great dynamic and live performing capabilities. Modeling is another approach of sound. As i just said, I don't have the full VSL trumpet, so i can't compare yet. And i must admit that i have the sampple modeling for a little couple of weeks, so, i have to spend much more time to get the best of this instrument. Personnaly, if feel that it sounds closer from the baroque trumpet, specifically for the trills, which sound very differently between the modern trumpet and baroque trumpet. But, I promise you that when I have found a way to buy more VSL brass without my wife killing me, i will try :-). Thanks again for your interest in my work. Best. Philippe.

Hi Beat, thanks for these links ... all my childhood ! And, thanks god, the seventies didn't brought us only the petrol crisis, but the baroque renewal too ! Kind regards Philippe. PS : can anybody say to me why, when i write something in this f.....g forum editor, all the text is stick, i can't jump to the line ?!

I don't mean to be too critical Philippe, it is excellent, your performance.
It is just that I am now used to the instantaneous, intense pleasure of the VSL solo C trumpet, in all its glorious permutations, and can readily hear this sound being used on this particular piece very appropriately.

Hi Beat, Thanks for this link. I find it too fast(as usual with many baroque players ...). I prefer this one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7exNrmWXyA. Enjoy ! Best. Philippe

Salut Philippe,
thank you for this great contribution to the "baroque collection" at the VSL forum. I especially like the straight, near, "honest" sound you achieved, a great choice for a not-too-big baroque ensemble

Hi Klaus,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, it is difficult to find a sound near baroque orchestra with samples of modern instruments. I dream of samples of baroque strings and woodwinds... but it's just a dream, i fear ...[:S]
Et merci pour l'astuce de l'éditeur : c'était bien ça !! [<:o)]
Amitiés.
Philippe
