  • VST Plugins always turn into folders!

Every time I install other plugins, for some reasong my Vienna (VST only, not AU, RTAS) always turn into folders and don't scan until I delte them and reinstall.

This happens on 3 different computers, so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.

    Anyone else?

    OSX Lion

    Macbook Pro Retina

  • Which are the "other plugins" that you install?

  • My Mac Pro just died so I migrated to a MacBook Pro Retina. I was hoping to my Mac Pro would last until the new ones come out in 2013, but that didn't happen;-( I've been installing many plugins like Waves, FxPansion, Izotope etc etc etc - literally almost 1000 plugins, 4 days to authorize everything - nightmare.
During the course of my migration I had to delete and reinstall the VSL plugins a bunch of times, so after a while I stopped installing VSL and installed everything else, fixed permissions and finally reinstalled VSL again at the very end, and everything is fine until next time I install or delete something from my Plugins folder.
In normal times I get this issue maybe ponce a month.
This only happens to the VST and VST3 versions of Vienna Ensemble Pro (all versions) and Vienna Instruments Pro, not AU or RTAS. I've just noticed this over the the last 5 years on three of my systems so far. I mentioned it to you guys a long time ago, but nothing was ever resolved. I guess I must be the only one;-)
Usually if I install or update other plugins (anything) this just happens and I have to delete the VST plugins and reinstall. If I don't delete first, they remain folders. If I double-click those folders I can see the normal "contents"  inside, but they won't work as plugins anymore and won't scan in Nuendo etc. I don't know why they are so fragile on my systems. I've been on Macs for the last 20 year and I know how to take care of them, so this is a real mystery to me.
If it's just, me it's no big deal. I have the installers handy so I can reinstall at any time when this happens, but if this rings a bell to you, let me know. I'll also be happy to help if you want me to test anything.
    Best,
    Jean-Yves

  • The vst,vst3 and rtas plugins are actually just symbolic links to the main plugin (.component). For some reason, it looks like your symbolic links are broken. Since we haven't had any other reports of this happening, it would be very helpful if you could try to find out after which installed package the links break.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • OK I found the perfect way to recreate this everytime on my system:

Just trash the AU versions of the plugins and the VST versions immediately become folders.

This may also happen on your system if all versions are linked to the same main component via a different "shell". If not, I'll remember to take note next time this happens, which it will soon;-)

  • Yes, if you delete the plugins, the references will naturally not work. The question is just what you want to achieve by deleting the plugins?

  • Sometimes I move all my AU plugins to my "AU Plugins-Unused" folder so I can load Final Cut Pro and other apps that crash with certain AU plugins. I usually keep all the AU plugins out of the AU Plugins folder unless I rent my studio out to a Logic person. I only use Nuendo so I don't need the AU versions 99% of the time.

From now on I will have to just remember to leave the VSL ones alone at all times. I'll keep you posted if I find another cause for this to happen.

QUESTION: I of course have VST and AU versions of almost all my plugins and when I drag my other plugins out of the AU plugins folder, the VST versions don't turn into folders. Why does this only happen with the VSL plugins?

  • The VSL plugins contain symbolic links to the main plugin, the AU .component, to save on space. If you prefer to have them as individual plugins, you could copy the AU plugins over to the VST folder and change the extension from ".component" to ".vst", and they would work properly.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • Ahh got it. That makes total sense. OK that's good to know. Very smart! ;-)

    Thank you.
