  • VE Pro 5 Extremely Load Distortion and Noise

I have had VE Pro 5 for about three weeks and I have been having a ton of trouble. When it works, it is amazing. I create a 64 bit Metaframe with four instances. I load up my score in Finale 2011. Load my VSTs. Connect all 4 instances with Finale. Load projects in each instance. After all loading is done (8GB or so) I play my score. In most cases, everything works perfectly. Sometimes for one to two hours, sometimes for only five minutes. What happens is this: It starts with some clicking and clipping. OK, latency issues. Very odd. There should be none. Then all hell breaks loose. What was once flowing music becomes cacophony at overload volumes. It sounds like a shortwave radio off station in search mode amplified to an explosive volume. I use headphones in my studio. When this happens, it really hurts. I have tride this in both Finale and Sibelius (latest version 64bit) and with the same results. I went out and bought an EMU 0404 PCIe sound card thinking my Focusrite went bad. It is clearly neither. I have used ALL available ASIO drivers including ASIO4All. Each instance is optimized with two buffers and 4 to 6 cores. Help is greatly appreciated and direly needed. Thanks, Victor

  •  The first thing to do is get rid of ASIO4ALL, you do not want this for Focusrite or EMU, and is best off your system.  I use an EMU 1820m with Sibelius and VSL,  and all works perfectly. I run the EMU at 8mS latency. Only use the EMU ASIO driver.

How much RAM do you have?  Start off setting a rather high latency (like 24mS),  and hopefully all is OK at that, then reduce it until the problem returns, then increase the latency by one level.

One thing is for sure,  the EMU ASIO driver works well on 64-bit Win 7,

  • I don't know why you believe there shouldn't be any latency issues. You can haz.

But that probably is not your issue. Do you have a dynamic IP? If so, make it static.

  •  When I replied yesterday I was on my laptop, and signatures don't show up when I'm using mobile broadband, so now I see your info.

It looks like you have more than enough RAM, but now I see you are using EW Play -  that is likely to be your problem. Play doesn't deal with memory organisation very well, I had all sorts of glitches, distortion (actually multiple glitches) and the renown uncontrollable burst of white noise,  once I stopped using too many simultaneous play instances,  I've never had a problem since.

Latency always exists, it just getting it low enough not to be noticeable.

  • Thanks for both of your replies. I hope to get to them this afternoon. I started using ASIO4All only because I believed at one point there3 a massive Finale based crash happened due to the EMU driver. That used to happen all the time with the 1212m. I will give it another shot. I will also look into the IP. Thanks!

  • I am EW's Online Coordinator but primarily I am a composer.

Simply untrue with the newer versions of Play 3 on the PC. My VE Pro 5 PC template is chock full of Hollywood Strings and Hollywood Brass running from an SSD and I have never experienced this problem even once since I builit this PC back in October.

I was unsure about that one too. Play 3 is the best yet and solid. Like you, I am using SSDs only. My drives, memory, and all essential hardware checks out. Everything is running at speck. With the 2011 architecture, I am nowhere near reaching a bottleneck. And as to my statement about latency, I am not even loading enough instruments for that to begin to be a problem. That is why this is so puzzling. I am back on my EMU ASIO and so far so good. Thanks to all.

  • well, if you don't know about your IP setting it's probably dynamic, which I think is the one factor that would cause what you describe.
