To add to other's observations of SSD impact using VSL, the following is initial impressions not forensic analysis but they've made a huge difference.

try making a raid 0 with your ssd, you should gain more (normally 1.5)
Is your ssd Sata III ? go with a Sata III card you will gain again, for 40 mn I drop to 1:40 mn (a 44 GB template)

Thanks for the comments. I'm expecting a SATA 3 PCIe card any day so will switch on receipt as the motherboard isn't SATA3.
Not keen on RAID configs but given your indicated speed improvements may try that in due course.

you must just be carefull is to have a backup because if one disk of the raid fails you loose everyting
I have an HD where ther is a copy of all my libs
