    Hi - I have been working with VEP (4.1) and Nuendo (5.5) for a while now, and I am finally beginning to get some paying work - with deadlines. LOL :) Can anyone shed some light on the following questions: 1) What is the best way to use VEP for handling work with multiple cues (e.g. working on AD Campaign and need to switch between five different pieces of music using my template)? I have a fairly elaborate template; however, I occasionally use new sounds in Kontakt or Omnisphere for example. I want them to load when I load each cue. I am under the impression that hosting VIs outside the sequencer is supposed to save time. 2) Should I bounce my midi tracks immediately? I find that when creating large arrangements I have to raise my audio buffers to 512 or 1024. When I want to record audio, I need to lower my buffers to 64 or 128 to minimize latency; however, all the midi stuff starts to drop out and crack. My system info is in my sig. I believe I have a fairly powerful system. Any suggestions is truly appreciated.

    1.  Load the template in VEP (Preserved) and extras directly in Nuendo.
    2. You could bounce MIDI tracks, but I would just freeze them and mix using the VSTi Outputs.

    Hey DG - I have frozen all of my VEP instrument tracks in Nuendo, and I am seeing fairly high VST activity on the performance meter. I set my Audio card buffers to 64 so I could record BASS but still getting clicks pops and poor perf. Any ideas? Mike

    What disk do you have ?

    How are your data organized on the disks ?

    Did you check how much memory was left when you get the clicks

    That's strange. I work at 128, and when my template is frozen I have virtually zero VST Performance on the meter. However, be aware that clicks can be caused (as Cyril said) by drives, and when tracks are frozen, you are actually playing back audio files. If you are trying to record and playback from the same drive and it is too full, slow etc., this will cause clicks.

    I would also do a few tests with empty VEP instances to see if it makes any difference what sample player is loaded. I'm only using Vienna Instruments Pro, which will probably work much better than anything else, for obvious reasons. [;)]

    Hey Guys -

    Thank you for your replies.

    I have seven drives in my system. Here is the system info:

    System Drive = (1) Western Digital (WD) SATA 500GB (Only running OS and applications) /
    Audio Drive =  (1) WD SATA 500GB (Only used for session audio) /
    Sample Drives = (2) WD SATA 1 @ 500GB, 1 @ 1TB (These drives contain my sample libraries. Kontakt Instruments, East West, etc /

    Glyph Drives = (3) @ 250GB per (These drives are used for session backups/archiving. Also one is hosting midi and loop files for access via Nuendo's Media Bay. I have an additional external WD drive (1TB) connect via firewire for additional midi and sample loops) /

    I am running Nuendo 5.5 64bit on a Windows 7 64bit system with 16GB RAM. My template utilizes approximately 8.5GB of RAM when completely loaded. / I still have about 5GB RAM left when the VST perf meter is bouncing at +50%.

    When composing using my Vis (which I host all in VEP), I set my audio card (RME 9652) buffers to about 512 for playback etc. It is when I want to record audio where the problem is. When my VI midi file track counts get reasonably high I will see my VST perf meter rise to about 60%. When recordin say a guitar part, I usually will drop my audio card buffer settings to 64 to avoid latency on input. This is when things get crazy. I have frozen all of my VEP intsances in the VI rack of Nuendo; however, the VST perf meter get bouncy and hangs at around 50%.

    DG, I would expect to be at zero as you have indicated your system does.

    Is it a buffer setting in VEP? Maybe audio card settings? I am only freeze the intrument and not the instrument and channels. Also, I do check to remove the intrument when freezing, but sometimes the midi file midi file plays no sound. Doesn't freezing creat a temp audio file of the midi track?

    Aslo, all of my HW drivers have recently benn updated to the latest rev as has all of my software.

    Sorry for the length of this,but I am not composing under deadline and the time suck....well it sucks. :)

    I need to stress one thing. At 64, my meter does not go to 0. At 128 it is pretty close to zero, although it may bounce as high as 10. I would track at 128 and use Direct monitoring. How does that feel when you play?

    Ok, so I am at 128 and things seem pretty good. Direct monitoring is fine for guitars etc; however, when I am recording vocalists most of them like a bit of reverb. which I provide via Neundo.

    Anyhow, so I think a part of my problem is that I had 15 EFX Returns with all of the EFX invoked. When I turned off the EFX the meter dropped considerably. So, I think lesson leraned: Keep all EFX off when tracking? What about revrbs for the Orch stuff say LASS? I haven't tested one or two instance of Altiverb running Todd-AO. My Orch guys like to hear the orch stuff a little wet at tracking.

    FX enabled when tracking is not a great idea. The best things to try are either using Roomworks for reverb or even a cheap hardware unit. You can feed this directly back to the cans without having to go through Nuendo at all, so it wouldn't affect the latency. Theoretically there would be a slight delay, but it would be very small (problaby around 1.5ms) and reverb always sounds late anyway, so for tracking it would be fine.

    You can put your samples drives in raid 0, your I/O will be 1.5 faster. More you have drive faster your I/O will be

    The problem is you need to have the same disk

    The best is to have ssd
