  • Puzzling sample-loading behavior in VEP Pro

    Hi Paul et al,

I'm confused about how sample-loading works in VE Pro.  My main orchestral metaframe has five VE Pro instances — Woodwinds, Brass, Strings, Perc, plus one for Spectrasonics' Trilian.  When I open the metaframe, I'll get the usual "data loading" messages for each of the VE Pro instances.  Then one by one they appear to finish loading—the "Data loading" messages go away, and all VE Pro instances display their mixing pages. This all happens pretty quickly. However if I then click on, say "Piccolo" in my Woodwinds instance, and the VI Pro interface comes up, the sample loading fill bar starts from 0% and increments all the way up to 100% (and can take some time to do so). The fill bar appears to be tracking the progress of sample loading of all instruments in all instances, since when it reaches 100%, the whole metaframe is done loading. FYI all instances are "preserved," and none are connected (the DAW isn't even open at this point).

Is this normal behavior for VE Pro?  Seems odd to me that the metaframe should appear to be done loading, but not actually finish loading samples for quite a while after.  FYI this metaframe is hosted on my slave machine, a Mac Pro Quad-Core running OS 10.6.8. I just installed the latest versions of VE Pro, VI Pro, and Vienna Suite this morning from the website. Also downloaded and ran the latest eLicensor Control Center, and checked that all was in order with Directory Manager.

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • It has nothing to do with VE Pro, but rather with VI Pro. The loading bar there is shared between all instances in the same host and will indicate loading progress for the remaining samples to load.

  • OK, thanks. I just did some testing — it appears that when you load a metaframe the samples start loading from the first VI Pro in the first VE Pro instance in the VEP server list, and then continue loading sequentially through the last VI Pro in the last VE Pro instance in the VEP server list.  Is that correct?

I confess I had not realized that just because a metaframe looks like it's done loading, that doesn't mean that all VE Pros are ready to be played.  Might it make sense to add a fill bar or other indicator to the front of the server interface to let us know when loading is truly done? This explains much puzzlement I've had over the years about why sometimes certain VE Pros have been mysteriously silent, only to become playable after a few minutes!

    Thanks,

    Peter
