  • [Resolved] Articulation chamber strings in Sibelius not working

    Hello Vienna and Sibelius users,

I'm writing a composition for flute, horn, solo percussion, solo cello and chamber orchestra.

    Here is my setup:

I've got Sibelius 6.2 and all of the Vienna libraries.

Vienna Ensemble Pro & Instruments Pro ( newest updates)

    Mac OSX 10.6.7

The articulations are not working with chamber strings. I've also tried it with the other ensemble strings and even the solo strings. But nothing wants to work right. They only work if I choose SE as my sound set. I would like to use the special articulations such as "Sul pont" and so on, which are only available in the other libraries. I've tried out all the different manuscripts of sibelius and I'm aware of the solo violin and violin 1 difference.

I've been reading in your forums and checked on the different advices I found from you guys. But this matter I haven't found yet.

I've written for other instruments such as harp and flute quartet ( woodwind and brass sound set ) & choir. I didn't have any problems there.

That means  that the sound sets and everything else were already correctly installed and prepared ( i guess??). I have downloaded all the sound sets and installed everything as explained in the "read me text".

There is another thing I don't know how to do.

I would like to switch to "con sordino" in the strings. How do I have to prepare the setup with the vienna instruments ( presets and matrices).

there is a preset for the "normal strings" (VC VSL Preset Level2ext) and there is a preset for the "muted strings" ( VC_mu Preset Level2ext.)    I can't figure out how the sounds can switch from one preset to the other.

Could somebody please help me on these problems.

I would really appreciate it because time is running short....[:#]

    thank-you for your effort.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Hello Dave!

In order to use the sound sets for our bigger collections, you will also have to load the VI presets (fxp files), that came with these sound sets. If you haven't done so yet, please copy these files to your VSL Custom Data folder. Then you should be able to load these presets.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi

    Thank-you for your quick response.

The fxp files have already been copied to the vsl custom data folder.

I have all the fxp files of all vienna instruments copied there.

It's funny, because the woodwinds preset ( concert flute, alto flute & bass flute ) functions.

I'm stiill trying out all sorts of combinations, VEP AU and VEP VST and so on for the strings .

What I would like to use is the VI-6 VSL Preset Level2ext ( Violins chamber ). The only thing that happens is that the 01 VI-6_perf-legato is getting triggered. It doesn't react to staccato, legato, pizz. and so on.

    A silly question:

In the VSL custom Folder there are some FXp files  in their folders and some on their own. Does that make a difference?

    Kind regards,

    Dave

  • Hello Dave!

You are still using the wrong preset for the Chamber Strings. For Sibelius please use the ones, that come with the sound set. The one for the Chamber violins I+II extended is called "Sib_ChambStr_Violins_L2+II".

How you organize your presets in the VSL Custom Data folder is up to you. Everything that's in this folder or in a subfolder will be found by the Vienna Instruments.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi

Thank-you for making me aware of that. I checked the directory manager and noticed that the custom folder was not properly routed with the vsl custom data folder. [:$]

The chamber strings are working now. [;)] I'll check the other instruments too.

I don't think there is a "sul tasto" and sul ponti" for the chamber strings available. Could this be true?

    Alright.

Finally I can start writing music now[Y]

Thank-you very much for your support.

    kind regards,

    Dave

  • Hi Dave!

Good to know, it's working now. Right, the Chamber Strings were not recorded with sul ponticello or sul tasto articulations.

  • I'm probably being a complete idiot (this is my first day having installed VSL SE and combining it with Sibelius so forgive me if the answer is painfully obvious), I have established the link between sibelius and VE and am now composing for string orchestra. Only I can't seem to get any articulations whatsoever, if I staccato any of the strings I just get what I assume is the default: Sustain. I am unable to have them play even legato, and I have tried inputting "legato" and slurring the phrase ....Is there something I need to do first? Thanks

  • It may have different reasons why articulation changes do not work as supposed. Did you make channel and program settings on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets tab for all instruments of your score? Did you load the Special Edition matrices in Vienna Ensemble?

You might also check out the chapter "Troubleshooting" in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual for more help. This manual can be downloaded here:
