  • CONGRATULATION : I load 18 Gb in 180 secs

    Hello

    A big applause to Martin S.  [:D]

I have expan my Orchestra, now I have most of the "New downloadable instruments"

I am loading on my Macpro 2010 12 core 2.93 GHz 24 GB with a Raid 0 of 4 x Sata III SSD:

    • All the articulations of the Appassionata
    • All the preset level 2 for Wind and Brass (except SAXes because I don't have enough memory left)
    • All the percussions of SE PLUS

    and this in 180 secs

Disk I/O are going up to 480 MB /s and are slow down because I don't have enough room on the Raid to put SE PLUS percussions

If I look to the activity monitor I have 1.71 GB free and the swap is using 376 KB

What is also very impressive is that only 0.5 % of 12 CPU is used (in total 65 %)

I am going to put on my 2008 Macpro 24 gb :

    • All the preset level 2 for the Saxes
    • The Strings of SE PLUS
    • The "others" (piano ....)

  • Very nice to hear. And many thanks for the extended testing :)

  • Are you saying that faster drives free up CPUs with VIpro/VEPros? I know that the sounds are loading and streaming faster with SSD but did'nt know that it help the CPU too.

  • No I do not say this.

With the late fix that did Martin, VE PRO loads much faster and now you can profit of the speed of the disks and Raids ( the previous version need 20 mn to load 11 GB )

    For CPU load :

With the previous version the CPU pressure was depending of how much samples was loaded and was constant and did not depends of the number of notes payed at a time

With the new version I cannot tell yet as I have not finish the changes in my new orchestral setup in the environment of Logic, may be Martin can answer.

All I can say is after loading my orchestral template there is very little CPU load

I should be able to tell you more on Friday or next week

  • On my new Macpro 2010 24 GB + raid 0 I did a trial loading my whole orchestra and playing my test piece (From the new world of A. Dvorak)

My whole orchestral template is more than 24 GB

    • Swap used is 2.51 GB
    • Mem free is 21.2 MB

    IT'S FABULOUS !

    VE Pro process :

    • Real mem : 21,52 GB
    • VM : 26,38 GB
    • Shared 808k
    • Private mem : 21,44 GB
    • VM Private : 23,24 GB
    • CPU used is about 220 % across the 12 cores

The I/O trafic when playing my test song is not going over 10 MB/S, average is around 2.9 MB/s and there a very few peaks goig over 5.6 MB/s

    Logic 9 is using only CPU 1 and 7 ; 1 is less than 10 % and 7 is around 25 %

    Question for Martin :

    • How much swap is it reasonable to use ?
    • Is it possible to reduce the buffer size that is loaded into memory when you load the orchestra ?
    • Should I split my orchestra on my two Macpro ?

  • Q: How much swap space is reasonable for OSX to use?
A: We have no control over how OSX decides to handle its swap file. We lock the memory pages which are used for the sample precache, then it is all up to OSX.
Q: Is it possible to reduce the size of sample preload cache?
A: Currently no. We have already added this to VI Pro however, and it will be included in an upcoming update.
Q: Should I split my orchestra over my two mac pros?
A: I would say, only if you experience performance issues with your current setup.
    Cheers,

  • Hello Martin

    Thanks for your answer,

I have wrote the question Q: How much swap space is reasonable for OSX to use?

    badly

    I should have wrote :

How much big the swap can grow without disturbing VE PRO server ?

If you want me to do some test of Q2 [:D]

  • Hello

    Another question for Martin ;

Analysing the I/O when VE Pro server is playing I have noticed it is writing quite often.

    • Is this done by the program or is it the VM mechanisme ?
    • Is there is a way to check on what disk it is writing ?

Thanks again for the very good work you are doing. You deserve a salary upgrade [:D]
