  • Some doubts before buying more SE instruments

Hello, friends of this community I'm new to the world of Vienna, so excuse me if there's too many simple things I don't know. I've just bought SE Woodwinds + PLUS and downloaded the VI Pro TRY version. I really love the VI Pro and the way I can combine articulations and customize the workflow, simply fantastic. I like the sound of the woodwinds too, and I'm thinking of getting some strings and brass as well, but before I want to know some things: 1) I've heard some demos at VSL site and some are made with 1st and second violins, but as I understand, there are no 1st and 2nd violins in any library here, so is there a good way of achieving both violin sections? This is fundamental to me; 2) If I buy the Extended versions of downloadable instruments, will I get half tone samples or only with DVD versions? 3) Why there aren't any presets in VI Pro, only matrix and patch show options? 4) I've seen somewhere performance presets in which the articulation is based on your playing, is there a place I can find these presets? Sorry for so many questions, but, as I said, I'm new to this world. Hope to be an active part of the Vienna community soon. Thanks in advance Adriano

    Welcome Adriano [:)],

There are quite some options with the Special Edition.

I´ll get straight to your questions:

    1) Concerning second violins, you best take advantage of the different section sizes:

Appassionata Violins with 20 players, only sustain and staccato (these are bonus files)

Orchestral Violins with 14 players (8 articulations)

Chamber Strings with 6 players (8 articulations)

and of course the Solo Strings can be used to add a first violinist as well.

    2) The Special Edition is sampled in half-tone [Edit:] whole-tone steps, but we have taken care that you will not notice this. It makes the whole package more efficient (less storage, less RAM consumption, less streaming effort).

    3) Of course you can also get presets in VI PRO, but the download collections of the SE are so small in comparison to the DVD collections, that everything fits in "just" matrices.

    4) Are you talking about the inspiration presets for the Special Edition and VI PRO?

What would you like to do?

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi, Paul. Let me see if I understand you: 1) I think I see what you mean, but sustain and staccato only would break the deal, right? Would be very limiting for my work. Anyway I thought about a few options, but I can't test them without the samples: 1.1) Using a slightly stretched patch would avoid phasing problems when using tutti violins in unison? 1.2) I heard of a workaround using transpose and pitch shifting. I found it now ideal, but maybe useful, but couldn't it be implemented inside VI Pro itself (a pitch shifting option)? 1.3) does every patch has repetitions? I wonder because I could then use alternate repetitions, using, let's say, repetitions 1 & 3 for 1st violins and 2 $ 4 for 2nd violins, that would avoid phasing as well, right? Limiting again, but could work. 2) You mean whole steps, I believe., I find it very satisfying with the woodwinds any, so no big problem here. 3) So I can save my presets, but there are no PREsets, right? :) 4) Nope. Patches that would play legato/staccato / spiccato according to the speed of my playing. Also I find legato transtitions for some woodwinds, specially the oboe, very clicky, is it normal? Thanks P.S.: Why my post CRs do not create new lines like yours? Adriano

    Hi Adriano,

I´ll have to correct myself: The Special Edition contains only whole-tone steps.... sorry about that.

    1) Sustains and Staccatos are just for the Appassionata Strings, as these are bonus files.

1.1) I don´t think that this will really work. You can pitch the samples for one section a whole tone to avoid phasing, if you really insist on using the same articulation of the same ensemble for the same note.

1.2) See above. Naturally, the more choice you have in articulationss (=> big DVD Collections), the better this will work.

1.3) All short patches have different alternations. And of course you get the Performance Repetitions as well. There is a lot you can do here, from adding a staccato in a second slot (to change the attack) to using slightly different articulations. Did you find any phasing problems in any of the demos you hear in our Demo Zone?

    2) Yes, sorry about that.

    3) Yes. our factory presets are always "just" a combination of the available matrices, to give you an overview.

    4) That´s very easy to set up, but I don´t think we have shown it in a video. The clicking of the oboe is normal, that´s how this instrument sounds.
