  • MONO Workaround VE Pro & Pro Tools

    Hi All-

I've been lurking around here and the Gearslutz Forums but cannot find the best way to route a mono track out of VE Pro into Pro Tools. Rather, what the best work-around would be since it seems this is not possible right now.

On each track in the VE Pro Mixer Window, it has the Power Panner- if I were to drag both the left point and the right point to the center- would that leave me w/ a mono track that I could go out, say, Net 1/Net 2- and in Pro Tools setup a Mono Aux and have it recieve Net 1?

Would this be giving me the full information of the source track or is there a better way to do this?

    Thanks!

    Scott

  • Just checkin' in....I know it's Saturday so the folks at VSL may not be on the forums. I'll try again on Monday.

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Anyone? Anyone from VSL?

Seems like a pretty important function....Kick, Bass, Snare, etc, etc....

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Can't you just monitor VE pro with Mono aux tracks or audio tracks in Pro Tools? I mean an aux track with a stereo input and a mono output. Not sure if it's possible in Pro Tools but it is in Logic.

  • Hey Fred-

Thanks for responding. I'm not sure why the folks at VSL aren't responding.

Anyways, yes, you can do that. But it's a bad way to do it. It's basically the equivallent of collapsing everything from a stereo feild to fit down the center.

I was wondering how to get a true mono signal. Rght now, on NET 3 / NET 4 for example, I'm just panning the snare ALL the way to the left and in Pro Tools, setting up a mono aux w. input NET 3 Left. I'm not sure if this is a better solution than the one you mentoined above either. I don't believe either are true mono sources being fed from VEP to PT.

Anyways, thanks again and it would be really helpful to hear from VSL on this one. Seems like it would be pretty important.

P.S. One thing I forgot to add- by doing that, setting up a stereo aux and sending it out mono, I'm unable to put my outboard MONO effects on the track. Pro Tools will not allow you to put a mono hardware insert on a stereo track.

  • Ok I understand,

One things i'm almost sure is that all VE outputs are stereo only. Is your source is mono, like a BFD output? If you route a mono output in a audio Input channel in VE Pro, the result will be mono, even if it come from a stereo output from VE Pro. It's like fake stereo, left and right channels are identicals. In other words, if the source is mono, it will result as mono. So taking just the left channel (NET 3) sounds right for me.

Apart some drum modules, is there a lot of mono sampled based instruments? I thought they where all stereo, even bass like trillian.

  •  Just use the panning solution. It works great. I do the same with Superior 2 and Omnisphere.

  • Hey ptlover-

Actually, those are the exact two products I'm trying to do MONO w/: Superior and Omni.

Can you further explain exactly what you do to acheive a true MONO source, from the VI instantied in VE Pro into PT?  That would be very helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Scott

  •  I never touch the panning in VEP. I pan in the VI itself, be it Omnisphere or Superior. In PT, I set up mono auxes. So, let's take Superior, which also has stereo outs only. I route the 3 kick mixer channels + the 3 snare mixer channels to outputs 3/4. I pan the kick channels to the left, and the snare channels to the right.

In PT, I choose plug-in > VEP 64 > Out 3/4.L as the input for the kick aux, and Out 3/4.R as the input for the snare aux.
