  • Sonar 8 + Vienna Instruments but no masterkeyboard

    Hail all!

I'm a beginner in Vienna Symphonic Library and just purchased Vienna Special Edition (standard version).

I write my midi compositions with Sonar 8 and I don't have a 88-key master keyboard. I use only my computer keyboard and mouse [:P]

Vienna seems fantastic and I started to devour every video tutorial and manuals about how to use all the features from the software. All good, but I have some important questions, because I didn't find anything in the forums:

    1. When I try to do a sequence like, for example: sforzato, legato and to end with a tremolo, I really don't get how to define those permomance tools, on the right notes, without modify the velocity expressions that I've put on the midi notes (in Sonar). I've tried to put some cells in an order I want (example using solo violin: in a vertical form, there is 1A [sforzato], 1B [legato], and 1C [tremolo]), it works, but only if I affect the velocity on the composition. And of, course, that is something going wrong that I don't get it.

    2. Another thing is how do I change the performance presets (without master-keyboard, conytrollers etc.) in for example Percussions preset, like using the timpani + percussion + cymbals and gongs using the same midi track? Is that possible or do I have to put each of those in a single diferent midi track for use them in the same composition?

    3. Finally, how do I use the Exp (Expression), Vel xf, Cell xf faders, using only my mouse and computer keyboard? Do I have to click first on the Learn button to assign the changes in the midi notes while I play the composition and do that manually with the mouse?

I know that all of these are very noob questions, but probably there are many other noobs like me that want to use all the benefits of this nice software [;)]

I would really appreciate if someone answer me soon, thanks :)

  • Hello Denison!

You can define for yourself how to change articulations in the Vienna Instruments/Control Edit/H-Span and V-Span menus.

You can input articulation changes (keyswitches or MIDI Control Changes) directly in Sonar. Just use the pencil tool in the piano roll.

Also MIDI controllers for Expression, Velocity XFade and Cell Xfade can be entered in Sonar the same way.

Please let me point you to the Vienna Instruments manual, where all this is explained in detail.

For more details about how to enter MIDI commands in Sonar please refer to the Sonar manual.

    Best regards,
    Andi
