  • Adjusting preload buffers (feature request)

Access times on SSDs are a tiny fraction of those on conventional hard drives, approaching 100x performance improvements. Accordingly, a modern system with good architecture and SSDs will be able to sample stream far more efficiently than before. However, VSL players are at the moment restricted by having preload buffers than cannot be modified, so users are unable to take any advantage from SSDs. I appreciate that having a fixed conservative value results in few glitches and problems, but buy making a new adjustable setting default to its current (hidden) value, I think there would be very little - if any - negative impact. It's an under the hood switch for power users on SSDs, and others need not touch it (indeed Kontakt 4.2 currently works very well using this method). I've recently found myself reluctant to purchase new VSL libraries because of this limitation. The potential gains for an all-SSD system are enormous if the player is optimised, and there appear to be no disadvantages if implemented correctly. I'd be grateful if VSL could look into adding this feature both on regular and VI-Pro players as soon as possible - many thanks.

  • We already have this parameter "under the hood", but we are working on having a precache override parameter available for the user in a not-so-distant update.

  • Great news, that would be very useful to those of us using SSD (my vienna stuff is already on one).

  • Fantastic news, thanks very much!

  • So that means probably that if I assemble an Intel 2600K based  16 gb ram daw, I can  manage even a large orchestra with a single computer? Exiting news!
What exactly can we expect on that line. Kontakt already works nicely at 6kb (=90% less then Vsl).

  • From some tests I made here today, performance is actually really good with a setting of 4kb buffers and an Intel SSD. That's 4MB RAM used for a 1000-sample legato patch.
