MOTU 2408 Core MkIII PCIe vs. EMU 1616m PCIe
-
I had an EMU1820m before.
Loved the audio quality, but hated the drivers.
I switched back to RME.
Do you know if your PCIe or the audiodock died ?
i still have my 1820m audiodock sitting in the box. You could give it a try if you want.

Strange observation, I have an Emu 1820m and it has worked perfectly from day one on Windows XP and is working flawlessly today on Windows 7 64-bit, the Emu patch mix is brilliant, you can even route audio between applications with it. I have rarely used the built in effects on the 1820m, it doesn't have enough processing power, by the time you have set the mixer up and set adequate metering, there isn't enough DSP power left, but forget the effects and it's a perfect interface at all times.
I use MOTU 24i/o's on my main system now, and that works perfectly at all times as well.

I also liked the patch mix application. Even the built-in effects are not that bad and they are quiet flexible.
The audiodock had good quality, features and the DA/AD conversion is top notch for the price regime.
But in the end all this was worth nothing for me, because whatever I did, it wasn´t possible to get a flawless performance for multitrack applications without dropouts, crackles, software crashes etc. And I think there was no trick in the box left, that I didn´t try to make it work, including IRQ, audio and PCI bus-latency optimizations, unshared slot switching etc etc., all this on a high quality Asus motherboard, but nothing helped. From many recording postings I learned, that many users had problems like this with the 1x20 series.
It´s a shame, since all the other features are so nice. At some point I just gave up and bought a RME Fireface 400.
Plugged it in, started Cubase - worked - out of the box, without a single bit of special tuning.
If you are lucky to have a Mobo-Emu combination that harmonizes with each other - perfect.

when I switched to an Intel-Mac setup, the MOTU 828mkII I had enjoyed success with before was now really unusable for serious work (wild spiking at every latency).
They may well have sorted the drivers by now, but there were reports of similar situations for some time afterwards. I bought an RME Multiface and got well immediately.
