  • Bad loops with sustain solo strings

    Hello

My solo sustained strings (SE+ extended collection) doesn't play correctly with long notes. There is a very perceptible drop in signal when VIP loops the sample. That makes the sustained strings more or less not usable after 5 seconds. That also appears with other strings collections (full DVD string orchestra collection, for exemple), but that is much less obvious (depending of which repetition is playing).

    Same with VI or VIP.

Is there a fix for this? Or some tricks?

    Thanks a lot

  •  Which full DVD string orchestra sound do you have problems with? as I have not noticed any problems - but there are a lot of sounds,  so if you can mention one specific patch or preset, I can give it a try and see what happens.

  • As I suggest, the loop with DVD collection is pretty good. I think I had a memory problem with my setting yesterday. Nothing is really perceptible today even with headphone. I tried with simple violins (10 VI-14_sus_Vib) and cellos sustain (10 VC-8_sus_Vib). Some repetitions (and/or layers) were almost perfects, others showed brief anomalies. And now they loop as long as I hold the note.

Things are not as good with Special Edition's solo strings. Here, a drop of sound is clearly audible after 5 seconds (I suppose when the loop is engaged). Furthermore, the loop seems to only play two times. After 15 seconds the sustain suddenly stop.

Anomalies appears with the violon (03S VI sustain) as well as with the alto (13S VA sustain) and the cello (23S VC sustain. Here is a brief test with violin then cello (MP3 file):

A well known problem? Any idea to fix it ? A workaround?

    Thanks again.

  • I don't recall the exact reasons at the moment, but the decision not to loop the solo strings was deliberate.

As a strings player myself, not looping the solo strings sustain patches makes perfect sense, as a solo player cannot play an endlessly sustained note... the bow direction has to be changed.  A section, of course, does not have that issue, as each player of the section can vary their bow strokes.

  • If I understand well, what we hear at 4.8 seconds would be simply a change in direction of the bow?

  • I believe that would be the case.

From personal experience, I would wish the sustains were a bit longer, perhaps in the 6 sec range, but I can also understand why they are not... in general one can do a longer sustain at a dynamic of P than one can at FF.
