  • Directivity profile in dry signal

I am wondering if Dietz can philosophize about using directivity in the dry signal.  Shouldn't this be done as a default?  It is not checked by default though.   I did read the manual on it but wasn't sure about that section.

  • It's an artistic decision.

Leaving the dry signal untouched by the Directivitry Profile keeps the virtual close microphone in it's ideal position. Imagine a busy assistant always moving the close mic to the proper place whenever a musician or an ensemble changes ist orientation in relation to MIR's main microphone array (and thus the main axis of a Venue).

To use the same analogy as above: Applying the Directivity Profile to the dry signal is like having a lazy assistant who doesn't move the close microphone when the musician rotates.

Depending on the instrument's characteristics, using the Directivity Profile for the dry signal will change the sound just a little bit or in a very, very obvious way - which might not be what you want to achieve. OTOH, using the Directivity Profile for the dry signal will amplify the impression of an instrument turning away from you (... ideal for showing off the possibilities of MIR ;-) ...)

  •  Thanks Dietz, that is great to get that information.  I think I am going to try using it as my somewhat vague inspiration has been to record a performance like the old "one-perfectly placed-microphone" recordings of the 1950s (adapted to stereo of course).
